Gear indicator only shows 'D'

Just noticed the gear indicator between the gages only shows 'D' regardless of if i am in P, R, N or D. It no longer indicates what gear the TIP is in.
It does show "Sport" when i have that turned on, but that is all.

The transmission seems to function fully normally: i can shift in manual properly, Sport and Normal mode seem to function normally. The display just always says D.

Anyone had this happen before? (2008 Cayenne S)

thanks,
John

I wonder if your screen is going out?

Any missing pixels when the Porsche screen comes up when you start the truck?

The display seems to work fine. In fact yesterday it finally warmed up here (has been -20 as a high recently) and the indicator worked properly again. Then this morning back to just the black D in an orange square. (Cold again this morning).
I asked my service person about it and since the transmission seems to work properly (it is not in 'limp' mode or anything) we will leave it until the vehicle is in for its next oil change next month before checking codes etc. There is a position sensor right by the shift lever that may be faulty.
I did find two threads (on different sites) listing the exact same issue from a few years ago, but no-one posted a fix.

I copied the enclosed picture from one of the other threads. This is what the 'D' looks like.

Indicator Lamp / pennies dimes in linkage

Same issue. There has been a ton of electrical work done at Porsche on my 09GTS DUE TO STOPPED UP DRAINS the 1st owner had work performed at Porsche.

I think the indicator selector switch down In center console and the speedo cluster screen maybe a multi faceted issue. Mine didn't start that until my 2 year old dropped a penny and dime into selector lever dust cover. Prior to that my screen had some flicker depending on weather. All motronic vehicles I've had in past are strong mechanically but have issues with dash lights sometimes chaffing on wires. My X5 had similar issues very similar setup. If anyone knows this is start of a fail safe due to bad servo in trans please repost thanks

Kindly
