Purchased a new CTT..... almost

Negoiated a great deal on a new 2005 CTT today. Now the bad news. I asked to drive the car that i was going to purchased and to my disappointment it had a severe steering wheel shimmy at 65-75 mph. Salesman said the car had been sitting on the lot for 3 months and the tires probably had flat spots and he'd have the service dept. check it out tomorrow. Car had 20" Sport Techno's
with Micheln Damaris tires. Do any of you have suggestions ,i'd really like to make the deal however i couldn't live with this shimmy. Thanks Kinkade

its a common problem on the Cayenne with 19" or bigger wheels. Mine however does not have any problem and I have 22" on mine. No problem on my gf's turbo too with 19"

I have 22's - and the vibration has always been there. I took it in for alignment but nothing was resolved. This issue is very common in most Cayenne's - and apparently (according to Porsche) is part of the 'driving experience'....

I had a slight problem with my 19" Cayenne Designs (more noticeable when the tires were cold) but have noticed no problem at all with my 20" SSR's (I believe one of the new Hunter machines was used to balance these).

I have the problem to on my brand spanking new 18" CS. However the dealer said very common for the factory tires and just needs to be balanced correctly. I'm guessing this should fix it since he new all about it and told me so. I have an appt a week from friday.

The CT could have a mix of both though, flat spots and balance. Let them check it out, no car is perfect from the factory and needs some little tweek especially after a 8000+mile journey over the ocean.

I've been told it's a common problem to have, but easy to fix. Just get the front wheels balanced correctly by someone who knows what they are doing and has the right equipment.

I agree, dont have this issue, I havent even got my car aligned after the Techart Springs installation, and i dont have this problem. My tires were mounted and balanced by tirerack, no vibrations here. My winter 18's yokohama geolander hts 052, mounted and balanced by wheelworks no issue either, is this issue only in air suspension, i wonder..

FWIW- It's not just a balance issue, it has a lot to do with whats called Road Force, and how it is transmitted.

In my experience with my 996TT, no Porsche dealer has been able to properly balance the wheels or align the car. Discount Tire does a better job on the balancing.

Fortunately, the Ruf Auto Centre is now open in Dallas, and that is where I will be taking my car for all service.

If the tires have flat spots they MAY come out after doing some driving. All tires have natural oils to the rubber that need to be exercised once in awhile. You may get lucky and have it the spots come out, but it's honestly unlikely at this point. If the dealer wants to move the vehicle bad enough, they will fix the problem or replace them. It's their fault they didn't move the truck and keep the tires round, not yours.

Damon,
You are absolutely right. My Cayenne sat on the lot for over a year before I bought her. The first thing the dealership had to do was replace all four tires which had gone out of round. After that the car drove like a dream!
