Engine whine

This is my 1st Cayenne and when I start it when it's cold there is a whine coming from the right front of the car. It seems to go away after it gets warm. Is this something I need to have the dealer look at?

Also the car seems to downshift hard when it is cold.

The cayenne is a high performance vehicle it will have that whine when cold if you start the car and wait maybe 1-2 mins you will hear it go away..yes also when its cold take it easy till your temp gauge rises to normal the vehicle will start in 1st i know mine does...keep shifts (unit normal temp) between 3000-4000 rpms if not you will blow vital engine parts...IE a cylinder may blow the block apart

happy driving and remember its a PORSCHE

haha

What's the whine for though?

I just warm up the car for several minutes before I take off .

Thanks for the responses guys. I always let my cars warm up before taking off. Just making sure I don't have anything to worry about.

Now if I could get my wife and kids to warm up their cars before taking off, that would be a miracle.

Well thats where eveyone goes wrong the cayenne SHOULD NOT be warmed up at a standstill the oil and other lubricants need to be pushed through the engine moving at speed..at least that is what my dealer and service guys tell me...its very bad for the engine to warm up ESPECIALLY if you have a cold winter by letting the car sit and try to get warm..just what i have been told

I agree with SpeedDemon. According to the owners manual yourare supposed to start the car and drive away. Do NOT sit and let it warm up. I start mine and drive it easy until it comes up to temp. It's been in the single digits all week and I have heard the whine when I first drive off. It goes away very quickly though. Mine is a Turbo S. I figured with a performance vehicle it's best to take it easy until up to running temp.

Thanks for the info. I used to let it run for 3-5 minutes before taking off. I will stop that immediately.

Guess I should read the owners manual.

So when you guys say, you start the car and just "drive it easy" until the temp goes up, what is "driving it easy" mean? I seem to have a hard time getting the car to go without reving it up when the engine is too cold...

taking it easy implies driving slowly with shifts between 3000 and 4000 RPMs the car will shift no worries if it holds for a few secs at say 3800 it will shift may feel hard just because the car hasnt had all the lube into the tranny....within 5 min of driving the car should be up to normal operation.

hope this clearifies things

The whine very well may be the secondary air pumps, they operate only on cold starts to provide the cats with air to speed the warming process for emissions reasons, these pumps coupled with extra fuel and late ignition timing do a great job of getting the cats to operating temp pretty quick.

Wow... first time I hear that warming up the car before take off is bad. I guess I should also be reading the manual... sigh.

And I thought the whining was my wife because I took the vehicle with the faster heating seats and steering wheel!
