G.Year Eagle: 275-45 20XL: Tire recommendations

Just purchased my 2004.5 CTT and she needs new tires pretty soon. The OEM tires are Conti 275-45-20.

I found a killer deal on Good year Eagle F1'S for $188 a piece. However, they are 27-45-ZR20XL. The Dunlaps come in 35. They are not as good a tire as the eagles and are more expensive at $319.
I am sure 40's or 35's will give me better performance, but the CTT is my family hauler (it is less of a fat, slow, pig than all the other disgusting SUV's, and that I why I got the CTT...it really is the perfect family car). So I don't expect it to perform like my GT2 and could go w/ the 45's. Also, the 40/20's really leave a lot of space in the wheel well that is less than appealing. So I am thinking of going w/ the 45's.

Is there any drawbacks/problems that I might run into w/ the 45's exept for the slight performance compromise and the slight speedo inaccuracy?

I would like to hear tire recommendations from my Cayenne brethren.

Thanks!

I recommend , Michelin Diamaris , I also heard good things with Yokohama Advan ST's..there are some vibration issues with continental in the past, but I forgot if they were on the 18 oem's.. I'll try digging the thread..

Thanks Alex,

The Diameris is a Truck tire and is $338...Tireracks survey rates them in the middle of the pack. The General Grabber is the top rated tire in that category. But part of the reason for its high rating could be its cost...half as much...plus the fact that most of the typical truck drivers I know, at least where I live don't have very good judgment or discerning tastes in the first place. Of course I don't categorize CTT owners as typical truck drivers by any means.

I would think that a max performance tire (made for sport cars but in truck sizes w/ an XL load rating) would be better. I know that Conti 4 by 4's that I have on now are complete junk (a truck tire...rated last by the way).

However, I am new to the truck world and will consider the Diamaris ( I know the PS2's on my GT2 are pretty decent, albeit way overpriced) tire.

Anyone else? I have searched for tire recommendations, by the way.

I have Hankook Ventus on my 20 sport techno rims...275 40 20. great looking tread pattern as well. They were brand new when I got my Cayenne S, and are looking good 7 k miles later and I seem to be getting good performance out of them. Ride seems a bit harsh to me though. I though about switching maybe to the Contis, but wont if u guys say they're crap.

I like my Bridgestone Turanza ER30's- great handling, quiet, but expensive.

Smile 45 Series Tires on Cayenne

I went through a couple sets of the Michelin Diamaris tires with only about 15K miles per set at $$$. The soft compound was also a nail magnet - flat tires with a only an inflatable spare was a problem. Not the kind of thing that brings thrills when you are towing.

I don't really spend extended periods of time over 100mph so I installed a set of Goodyear Fortera 275-45/20s and have been pleased with the great wear characteristics, ride quality and M+S rating.

The Treadwear rating is 500 - compare that to anything else that fits a Cayenne and then check out the pricing - SOLD.

I can live with a little speedometer error.

It seems, then, that since I will be going w/ a 45, my two choices are the G. Eagle F1's (a superior max performance tire w/ an XL load rating) and the General Grabber...a truck tire that everyone raves about. The Diameres are in the middle of the pack in terms of tire racks surveys and the Grabbers are top rated. But like I said, they are top rated by American truck/SUV drivers.

But if you read their opinions they really rave about the Grabbers. Of course drivers of American trucks/SUV's also watch Nascar and go to tractor pulls.

The Eagles are top rated by sports car enthusiasts. Hmmm has anyone experienced either of these tires?

Ive got the Diamaris on my 20" Oem Sport Design and they are in another league compared to the Oem supplied Continentals, especially Driving on the Wet traction has increased and so is the road noise.

I e-mailed Damon (tire rack) asking about going w/ a 45. If that turns out to not be a good idea, I will go w/ the Diamaris
