Adding Oil

Came across a 25 page Thread at Rennlist on how many Quarts of Synthetic oil are added to your Cayenne. The range was between every 400 miles and every 2,000 miles. Neither sounded good to me with the lower range being stunningly bad. Was this an issue with early engine renditions or is it such an accepted part of life with Porsche that nobody even talks about it?

Burning oil: Some engines do and some don't. Taking short trips and stop and go traffic can be a contributing factor. I have topped off oil in my 2011 Cayenne thrice (so total 1.5 quarts) and have 14 K miles on the odometer. I followed break in rules but did drive in a spirited fashion once the fluids were warmed up, my commute is exclusively highway and very occasionally is it less than 5 miles.

4,000 miles since new, followed break-in to the letter. Around 10 mile commute each way. Oil has indicated full since new; haven't added a drop. I don't understand the variation in engines, but there it is.

Same here I have not added any oil and have about 4,500 miles on it. Most of the driving is highway about 30 miles (weekday) and sometimes locally less than 5 miles (weekends).

Not to hi-jack your thread, but what were your break-in-rules?

Not over a certain RPM during the first 500 miles and changed the oil at 3000 miles and 0-40 weight oil?

stayed under 4000 rpms for 2500 miles. Warmed up engine until oil was at least 100 degrees during break-in period; never drove off cold. I took two long highway trips in first 1000 miles of about 300 miles each-varied rpms during these trips. Tried to do as few short trips as possible in first 2000 miles (for those, drove my daughter's KIA ). I have not changed the oil and do not intend to until 10K miles as directed by Porsche. Might be I have just been lucky-who knows?

I took delivery of my CTT March 2011 and just traded it back in last week - long story.

As far as oil, I nearly went through TWO cases (10 quarts) of Mobil 1 0-40W in 10 months and 8400 miles. It was ridiculous how she chewed up oil every few hundred miles. The dealer checked the car twice and determined nothing was wrong, just claimed it should get better after 10K miles.

That's not the primary reason I got rid of it but I'm glad I did.

1.5 quarts in 6000 miles
Always let it warm up but drove like I stole it from the beginning, and never a problem
Some of my first miles were on Porsche's Leipzig track

I got carried away with my daily driver. We have an X5 for a family SUV that wife uses. I have an F430 for fun.

After a nearly a year with the CTT, paying nearly 1K/mo payment, getting 15 mpg, putting quart of oil in every month, getting hit with personal prop taxes on it, knowing it's going to get beat up in the northeast elements ... I decided on a change. I went back to my Porsche / Audi dealer and they gave me a generous trade of 100K, sold me a new S4 for 2K under invoice, and with what I owed, I was able to drive away with no payments (free and clear) with nearly 4K cash back in my pocket.
