My mistake. I did not coat Gene's pipes black. Well, I did, but they were for his motorcycle. I wondered why they looked different than mine, but figured it was because I have a Diesel. I will be coating his tips black after this thread now though

I have to say that Mike's prices are insanely low and was a great guy to talk to about powder coating, but I decided to go the plasti-dip route at least for now.

My reasoning was that that I'm still not sure if I'll like it or not. With the plasti-dip I can (in theory) just peal it off where with powder coating I'd have to buy new tips.

So in keeping with my MO, here is a bunch of info on the process

Technically the bolts on the clamp have a torx head, but I used a 10mm 12 point socket to get them off. You have to loosen the clamps almost to the point that the bolt comes out to give enough room for the pipes to separate. My passenger side popped off with a bit of twist, but the driver side was pretty stiff and I lifted myself a couple inches off the ground before it broke free and twisted for me. The driver side pipe had some surface rust and corrosion already where the passenger side looked like it could have just been installed.

I used dish soap and a scrubby sponge to clean off the outer casing. Then I taped the inner part and pipe off and had at it. I did 4 coats with 30-45 minutes between coats. It looked sketchy after the first coat, but after the 4th dried to the touch they don't look bad at all.

I'll reinstall them tomorrow and get an "after" picture too.

 

looks good. I have the rear bumper and badging on my Nissan Frontier plasti dipped and its holding up real well a year later.

 

As promised, back on again. Honestly I'm just not sure. Guess I'll have to see if it grows on me.
