DIY - 958 PCM3.1 Video Interface and Android Module Installation
Hi,
This is my first post, as I was leecher on this forum for a while now.
I've just bought a set of video interface and android module for my 2011 958.
Since I'm chinese, I always wish my 958 can read chinese song titles and adding a backview camera. But it just can't, unless you flash the ROM into China firmware, but then it will lose the navigation entirely.
Nothing was on the market, up until recently I came across on Aliexpress.
Video interface isn't new, but adding Android module is interresting!
At the time of this, the foreign exchange for Canadian FX was 1.3! 500$USD cost me a bit over 800$CAD including duty and custom.
The beauty of this thing is, you can switch and back from the original head unit without sacrificing the OEM look. ALso, the Android unit is claim to be able to play 1080p video.....
Our system however max out at 800 x 480, I'm sure lots of you would laugh, because you won't be able to enjoy the HD anyways.
Nevermind, I just like to be able to watch Music video, rather than the song only.
At this time, I've just installed the embedded PCB/ LVDS etc related to the headunit, and tested out the interface. I've yet to install and tested out the Android module.
I haven't bought the back view camera, because I just can't find one that has the door switch as well.
Here's the videos of my DIY:
(This part I couldn't take video, because I was too stress, and I follow this video entirely)
Installation Part 2 - (Android Interface) (No Video, See paragraph below)
, Wifi, (Bluetooth), 3G internet function (In Progress)
I'm thinking going to tap the Passenger door side fuse box for the android unit as suggested by the Dash cam Installation DIY.
Hopefully will be easy to find the "Acc".
The difficulty should be "Medium".
Not fully plug and play, and some patience is needed to get these wiring setup and tested.
The set came in two boxes.
One for the video interface and the other the Android unit.
Here's the Video interface and wire bundles.
It came with a power connector splitter.
Only two ribbon cable needed. As the PCB is the switch itself.
Here's my final installation of the modules.
Upto here, you need to find a proper spot for your module.
There aren't any space at all on the footwell of the cayenne.
All you could find is the void behind the glove box.
However, the glove box itself has its "Own" box shroud.
You have to remove it from the car to work it.
Here's the picture, self explained:
Upto here, let me show you how much clearance you get once mounted. Behind the glove box.
There's about 2 inch of space. This would allow some sort of ventilation....
Note: you will need to roll back some insulation in the area to get this open space.
Because of this tight space, and for sake of maintainability, I used velcro to mount the module.
I found this neat because of the uncertainty of the clearance for your wire, no need template, adjust to space you need for the wire bundle.
Especially! No drilling.
Finally, plug in all your wires and feed you power cable for the Android Module to the RH fuse box.
Here's also the routing for my GPS antenna and Microphone clip.
More updates on the testing Android soon.

So, here you go.
Final tested and working!
The Android system is default to english.
Very pretty interface.
I've now yet to determine where to mount these box, but with future ease of access.
I'm thinking to mount it behind the glove box.
This way, I will be able to get quick access for resets and hook up any new video input.
Very nice interface in English!!
It has wifi, so you can pickup your cellphone thethering for internet.

Is there a site where I can see the Android module to know more?

Interesting! What version of Android operating system? How to update? My car already has backup camera only seen in reverse. Is the camera you mention another add-on camera in addition to backup? I also have the SIM module so I can plug in full sized GSM SIM card and wonder if that will be interfering with Android install?

2. The seller (Manufacture) doesn't recommend to update if its stable.
3. The new module will add backup camera feature if you don't have already.
If you already have the factory backup camera, then you have option to disable to new one.
4. It also has input for front camera.
5. The android nor the interface box has Sim card slot, but your PCM3.1 should already have this feature. The interface PCB is very smart. If there's phone call, it will switch out of the Android video and will let you talk.
6. I have the Android Module manual. PM me, I can fwd to you.
7. I found our PCM resistive screen is not as desire for touch screen. Don't expect the smoothness of a iphone fool you, click and drag is difficult to do. I can make a analogy to a Garmin GPS manupulating.
8. The speed of the Android is quite fast. I've play some MP4 file at 1080p resolution no problem at all. I downloaded them on Youtube, mostly 30fps, sounds really good in the cayenne. (I'm not a audiophile btw). It's only stereo output.... So give and take.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together. Did you take a video of all the things the new system will do? So far it looks really cool but I'm hesitant on pulling the trigger due to not knowing it's full functionality.

And it take a lot of apps that you download from Google Play Store to it.
Some works better than other.
Here's a video of Waze in action.

It would be very cool if it could download and run the ICarScan software - you'll find that on Google Play.. You could do on-line, in-use diagnostics from the comfort of your touchscreen.

I've tried, but google play doesn't allow to use on this machine.

If you poke around a bit you can find the install APK.. or if you PM me with your email I'll email it to you.
It still may not work - but it would be cool to see if it did.. It almost works on my Ellipsis-7 tablet (a Verizon relabeled Quanta something..)

But once you have the Android one, you will ditch the factory Nav.
Google Map and Waze is way prettier.
