When I first moved to Los Angeles in 1979, I was invited to a film shoot in North Hollywood. The director arrived in a black Mercedes, but he had hired a James Dean lookalike to drive his silver 550 there and pose, leaning on it, wearing a red jacket, all night. The location shoot was on Lankershim about 3 blocks from the Barris shop where the real #130 had it's numbers and "Little Bastard" painted on it, 9/30/55.

Great introduction to Los Angeles.

Yeah, but the funny thing is, in 1979, it wasn't a big deal. Just a very basic $15K car. How things change.

Maybe a "3". I saw Gooding auction this one: http://www.goodingco.com/car/1955-po...1500-rs-spyder for $3,350,000 plus a 10% buyer's premium at Amelia Island earlier this month.

First, as it turns out it wasn't "Allen" that I was talking to about the 550 Spyder at Cars and Coffee last year, it was Bob Ingram's son Cam.. same fella who won last June's Pebble Beach Concours with a '48 356 Gmund coupe that he restored for the Porsche family.

At the first Saturday event earlier this month I was talking to Cam about the 550 Spyder, and he mentioned the car that sold at Amelia Island, and how the value of their car had just gone up.

Wish I could say the same about my 401K ...

I suspect he's right about the value of his car. IIRC there were two other bidders who pushed the Amelia Island car well north of $3 million. They probably haven't lost interest!
