Clear Bra, Car Cover and Detailing Dilema!

First, I want to say thank you to Phil, Moe, Matt and all the other detailers for sharing their time and knowledge. This is my first post in the detailing section but I enjoy reading it everyday.

This is my situation: I live in New Jersey and my brand new 2008 Black Boxster S is fully clear bra'd with Venture Shield. I mean every square inch of the paint. I do not have a garage and live in a Condo. I bought the Porsche OEM Outdoor Car Cover and also a separate cover that only protects the convertible top. My main concern is to protect the paint from fading due to it sitting out in the sun, because years from now, when I remove all the clear bra I would like to have the original paint be as if my car was new (hopefully I will have a garage by then). The problem is that it is difficult for me to wash the car everyday before I put on the outside cover. What would you recommend me to do so as to not scratch up the clear bra too badly, but to prevent the original black paint from fading. I would not be opposed to not covering if there was a way to prevent the fading by waxing or using a paint sealant. When I tried to use the California duster the oils from it hazed up the plastic bra. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Lightbulb Wipe down product

Your best bet in my opinion is Chemical guys one, as this will not scratch unless the car is CAKED with dirt or mud. I wipe my black truck down every other day and there is almost no marring, of course quality soft microfiber towels are a must.

I wouldn't worry about your paint fading. The paint itself has UV inhibitors and the film further has UV protection. I think you're going to do more harm than good by wiping down the finish as opposed to simply washing weekly. I'm not a fan of wiping cars down with detail spray after the car has been driven. No matter how careful you think you are, you're marring and scratching the finish. The silicones in the detail spray hide the damage and make you think you're OK. One wipedown with alcohol and you see the cons of the detail spray wipedown.

You definitely have a dilemma. I really am not a big fan of the Porsche OEM covers - I just buffed out a 996 TT that was covered outside with that cover on a windy day and spent almost 15 hours wet-sanding and buffing it. Anytime you use a car cover, it is a double edged sword. Ideally, you only want to cover a "clean" car and by clean I mean one which you have just washed. I look at it this way; which will be easier for me to remove, the dust or the spider webbing/scratches? If you're concerned about the fading of the paint, don't be. If you ever remove the film, you can always remove the oxidation with a mild polish. Just keep the film waxed all the time (especially the tops of the car) and you should be ok.

Moe,

There are no silicon oils in "one" and remember I said almost no marring, but there is less than a typical correct washing not to mention the time savings. To answer the other guys question the product is "Smartwax One" made by chemical guys but then again isnt every product Chemical guys (lol)I have used this set-up for a year on a black metallic paint on my work truck almost every day, and if you use the combo of CR spotless and One unbeatable for time invested.

Thank you guys for the advice. After speaking with Matt at Detailing Dynamics I have decided to get rid of the OEM cover. It is basically brand new so I am going to see if Porsche Design Selection will take it back and give me a refund. I also made an appt. to bring the car to Matt to detail and teach me how to take care of my Ventureshield. He is a great guy and was so helpful on the phone in educating me about how to care for the car. I am definitely looking forward to my detailing in next weekend. I'll post pix after the cleaning. Peace, Mark

Wink and a nod

This is a joke for the pro detailing community, as Chemical guys makes alot of products for re-label and the running joke is " every product is made by Chemical Guys" hope this clears things up.

Yes, it is on the non-disclosure part of their contract. When we were negotiating with our clay manufacturer, they would not make it it yellow for us b/c the color was already given to Griot's (and they did not tell us that, but we figured it out). It's just business. Just like in many other industries, there are some companies that come up with new and improved products and others that take the same product, re-brand and re-market it and sell it for more money. That's capitalism.
