Cleaning exhaust tips - what to use?

My side exhaust on my G55 is filthy - what do you guys recommend using? Tons of tar and the tips are black from the exhaust. I got the tar of with a paint thinner - worked really well. I want to make them look new again.

Thx.

Good advice Moe. Here's another exhaust tip writeup that covers some regular wash maintenance techniques as well. Very similar restoration process using the 0000 grade steel wool.

Thanks...I should have noted...I no longer use the zymol Metall. We now use Menzerna Power Finish to polish the tail pipes. It gives the pipes a more polished and clean look.

There are stainless steel products out there at lowes or home depot. I would personally just get the intended products made for automotive use. We can get the products in your hands in a few days without breaking the bank...in the long run that's the best way to go.

Get the Total Auto wash. You can also use it to clean the engine, wheels, and door jams.

Then get the Menzerna Power Finish in the 16oz. This can be great also if you get little scuffs in the paint and you want to remove them by hand.

If you don't have any grunt towels, here are some good microfibers that are multi-purpose for such things as cleaning tailpipes:

The Menzeran Power finish seems a bit pricey for using it on the tips...is this what you are recommending?

I recommend FLITZ works everytime, can get it at boating places or some hardware stores. It's a phenomenal metal polish.

The 16oz is not bad. I recommend it because of the results it get on the pipes. Also, it's going to be used elsewhere as well. You can polish the paint with it too. It's a product you'll wish you had when a shopping cart scuffs the bumpers or someone else backs into you and their paint is on your paint and you need something to safely remove the unsightly scuff.

If you're up to it, just add some wax to the order, and you'll be able to polish and wx the paint as well for a nice detail. Does that help?

+1 for Flitz. Great stuff and I use microfiber instead of steel wool to keep the chrome in shape. I've also found that P21S polishing soap is great to use after getting the real crud off the exhaust tips. It gets them cleaned up without having to use polish each time.
