I work with a lot of '90's era black cars which are single stage, so clear coat thickness is not an issue...

As far as clear coat goes, still useful...
Grouse pretty much covered it...Both sides of a car mirror each other, so if the passenger rear is 4.0 then the driver side will be the same as long as there is no paint work. From there you can safely assume you can safely take the clear down a mil or two so you'd be looking at readings of .039 to .038 or so.
