Real or Steal? Vintage Ferrari GTO Sale Might be a Hoax
Recently a ultra-rare 1962 Ferrari GTO went up for sale on a German site owned by eBay. Nothing new. The asking price was $63.7million. You have my attention.
The rare Ferrari is well within the limits of what those cost, granted it’s about a $10 million increase, but with Ferrari prices shooting through the roof lately, search up how much Dinos have risen, it’s not within the realm of crackpot crazy prices. At least when you are considering vintage Ferraris, especially vintage Ferrari racecars.

I haven't been following this matter much. What is known is that there are 39 "original" GTOs (36 250 and 3 converted 330s). They are all well-documented. There are also a number of cars that have been created from 250 GTEs, PF Coupes and other "donor" cars (mostly, they required cutting the chassis to shorten them, new bodies and up-rating the mechanicals). They have varying levels of fit, finish and quality. Favre, Jones and Allegretti were generally considered as the best, but nothing's perfect. Even factory-produced weren't perfect, and many cars were crashed and repaired when raced in-period. In fact, some owners had replicas built so they didn't put the wear and tear on their real cars.
Still, that this fraud could be perpetrated is concerning. I know Marcel, and we correspond from time to time on a number of different issues. He's not talking about this (as he isn't on the case of 0384AM), because he's in the middle of it. That's fair, and the facts will all come out somehow. Marcel is generally indeed recognized as the top marque historian, and I'd defer to him over Ferrari's own Classiche department.
But, how anyone could buy a fake for this price is truly baffling. For that money, you do your due diligence. There are a few people to hire in this regard. Why the buyer didn't pay someone (or maybe the buyer did?) to examine, research and sign-off on the purchase, I don't know.
