Will the car have the RSR fender flares, or will it be narrow like the cup cars?

 

We are using this RSR chassis since it's one of the last ones available and it's in great condition. We have the best parts coming off our Speed GT 996 Cup car so we will basically be tranferring all the parts over to the new chassis. We are installing the stock rear quarters on this car and then we will be massaging them to fit our larger wheels as well to accomodate the lowered suspension geometry.

The narrower body is more aerodynamic and the RSR bodywork is not legal in Speed GT.

A couple of questions:

• How do you determine if the chassis is "used up" other than damage and repairs due to accidents?
• I assume this is a customer's car, wouldn't have been financially beneficical for both parties just to sell them the already fully developed GMG 996 cup car?

With the reputation of GMG, this car will without a dought be the best 996 cup car in the series, but a Speed GT 997 cup is just a faster, better beast. Can you divulge the details as to the logic behind this project.

The reason for this work is that our 996 Speed Car had some damage to it from Laguna last year when I rented the car out so instead of just fixing the car, I decided to transfer to all the parts to a relatively new chassis. This particular one was raced at the 12 hrs of Sebring in 2005 and I have the history of this chassis.

We know the 997 is quicker but I have all the parts to make this 996 just as good.

FYI, I qualified this 996 at Laguna in 2006 with a 1:29.** and most of the 997's in 2007 were in the 1:30.** range but I think the main reason is because we were 100lbs. heavier in the 997.

Plus this 996 Speed GT car is a $150K car if someone wants to buy it. Sounds like a lot until you realize that a new Speed GT 997 will cost you $275K to build!

 

The "ALMS LEADER LIGHT SYSTEM" works directly from the official timing and scoring system, operating on telemetry sent from time and scoring computers.

James,That makes perfect sense!
I did the same thing when I rolled my scca club racer into a little ball at Sears Point in the early 80's. Much easier and less expensive to find a good chassis and swap the parts, than build a new car from scratch.

I just couldn't see someone walking in and placing an order to convert their 996RSR over to a 996 cup.

Please don't think I was questioning your driving or GMG's car preperation, as both speak for themselves. You and your companies ability to race at the top of the Speed series is well documented.

Oh yeah, $150k for a fully sorted 996 cup is really a very good deal!
