Toyo RA-1 v. R888

I'm planning on a set of wheels and tires for tracking my 997 GT3. I'm going to drive, rather than trailer, to the track. 18" RA-1s have been recommmended to me. What's been your experience? How about R-888s? Thanks!

R888,s

I just put a set on, if you use 205's in the back you don't have to worry about setting your car up when you switch out your stock set out.
If you have not yet had a race set up and corner balance, do that first, you will not believe how sticky your car will get even with the stock tires.
My buddy has been getting 16 heat cycles on his 215's, he pulls the tires off after 8 and remounts for even wear.

I think 305's would work better than 205's. . .

Yes, thanks. I'm planning on 305s. Do you have any experience with the Toyos?

Please note that my Toyo experience is on much lighter cars like 1st gen RX7, miata, and Spec Racer Ford (long story). Generally I like the RA1's a lot. You can find DOT tires with some more grip, but the wear and consistency is great. They are pretty much the same from sticker to until you cord them.

Advan 048 or MPSC are better tires in my opinion. I ran RA1's a couple of years ago and was pleased with their consistancy but not blown away. Advan 048 are miles ahead and channel enough water to be run on the street if run carefully.

Woops, I meant 305's and 315's.
You can go up to a 335 if you go to a 12 1/2 inch rim, but if you use the 315 or 325, you will need to adjust your set up everytime you want to go back to your stocks.
If you can come to Phoenix next weekend you can see four of us running Phoenix International Raceway.
The PCA guys cancelled due to not enough attendance, but NASA and BMW will still be running.

I did last season on RA-1's. 305 rear, 245 fronts on 18" BBS wheels. I liked them quite a bit. Very predictable, and they get stickier the more you drive into the corners. Mine were shaved to 4/32". Highly recommended as a good step up from the MPSC's that come standard on the GT3.

first, if you like RA1, you will LOVE R888, it's by FAR superior than RA1, on and if buts. if anyone insist RA1 over R888, something is wrong with his head.

245/305 has IDENTICAL rolling diamter as OEM 19".
but 255/315 is better. you DO NOT have to reset up the car.
first get the car set up with correct alignment based on how YOU drive, there is no magic alignment settings. but there is a setting for YOU. once you set that up, you can run stock 19", 245/305 or 255/315 without touching set up again.

doug c., i ran SP again yesterday as i was not happy with the RS lap time with GGR. i lapped faster in 996GT3 by 2 seconds over the RS hahaha. btw, a friend of mine did 1:49 in a hoosier'd GT3.

Mooty, what's been done to your 6 GT3 to allow you to run 2 seconds quicker at SP?

Thanks for the info! Were your BBS fronts 8.5" or 9"? In order to race in a stock class, I need to use a stock width wheel, which is 8.5". The stock fronts are 235s. Can I run a 245 on an 8.5" width wheel?

The BBS's I had were stock widths, 8.5" and 12". No problems with Toyo 245's.

John: The 1:49 at SP does not surprise me at all - the car, if well-set up and driven by a skilled driver, is easily capable of that time, perhaps even better. I have some Hoosiers sitting in the garage and I am thinking of running them at GGR Thunderhill in April. The MPSC tires were less than great at SP, but I have been driving my truck around all winter in the snow, so the re-learning curve on the GT3 was substantial.
