996 GT3 or 997 GT3?

Seen some 04 GT3s floating around. Is there a big difference between the 996 04 GT3, or a new 997 GT3?

HP, Handling, etc...?

Thanks to all

they do compare ...
996 are a handful but fun...
997 much more refined platform more Hp ...

996 no sun roof ... ( a good thing)
997 sunroof a bad thing

do a search there are pros and cons to everything, its really what you want to do with the car... i like either one...

997 has the nannies, which can be good or bad depending on your personal driving preferences. I didn't want them, but could have used them on the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca!!!

You get pretty much the same dry sump motor in both.
996-380bhp
997-415bhp (but its heavier)

With regard their handling, both are extremely competent. The 7 has a more refined chassis (more rigid making it less shaky at speed) and a little better stock suspension making it easier to drive fast. Because the 6 is a little lighter its more tossable (some say more fun because of this) and requires more driver attention at/near the limit. A PCA instructor told me that with a good driver the difference in lap times between the two (on a one and half/two minute course) would be roughly 1 sec.

As far as the interior and exterior, most would agree the 7 is light years better. And as ltcjramos and 930man stated, you get more creature comforts (sun roof, Sport mode, etc) and the nanny to keep you out of trouble.

So to answer your initial question is there a big difference between the two...? Yes, a 40k better difference? I dont think so... just my $.02

I have driven a 2000 996 gt3 in london... Its a totally different car. First of all they look totally different. 997 is a much better looking car.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 996 but I think the mk1 looks much better than the mkII..don't really fancy the wing on the mkII.

Second.. The power.. 997 is 415hp vs 380hp on 996.

Third.. The ride.. I traded my 996 4S in for the new gt3 and the ride is just as comfortable... And the clutch is amazing. Its great. And u have traction control and PASM.. The list goes on and on..

No doubt 7 GT3 is definitely a better car than 6 GT3. But, I just don't feel it's $40-$50k more better. 7 GT3 just isn't a best time to buy it at this point unless money isn't an issue to you.

I can easily affort 997 GT3 when it came out last year but I just don't have a guts to spend so much more money and then take the depreciation within few years. Besides, I believe 6 GT3 will make you a better 911 driver as it's a lot more demanding at limit which is kinda addicting after awhile. On a track, you'll see your mistakes more clearly in 996 than 997 and I think that's one of the few things I really love about the car. Oh yea, I can put just $20k into my car right now and make it a contender for 997 GT3 anytime too.

hum... i am faster in the 6, but i go OTE more in the RS

anyways, if you use it on track more, get 6
if you like to drive on street a lot, get 7.
7 is the better car, but not 40k better.

Porsche Super Cup Champion says about 996 and 997. Sounds so good! I guess not only a chassis is better at the limit, some electronics help as well for quicker times.

HUGE points right there and I couldn't agree more!!!! People who appreciate the rawer less is better predecessors will appreciate the 997 GT variants, but it just wont give the same on edge thrill IMO.

In the past 5 years, I have owned a 996TTX50, 05 GT3, 07 GT3, 07 GtSilver TT with ceramics Tip and an 08 Cobalt blue with ceramics and 6 speeds.

I started out with a $10K 1980 SC in the 90s. I loved that car.

So, now I sold everything and bought an low mileage '04 GT3, put in the new leather sport seats harnesses and cage, increased engine power to 411, stripped car of anything not of use. 2800 lbs.

So now I own the best car I have ever owned. I Love it!
