Info re 996GT2 MkI vs MkII

I am a newbie and been a P-car fan all my life. I life long ambition actually and nearly there to realise it...!

So I am looking to get a GT2, and maybe get a basic ECU tune. I believe these are good to get power to around 550HP.

Car will be for w/e and track days. Don't think I have the mustard to go beyond 550HP for now escpecially with the traction control not available on the GT2 - was this an option or just not offered?

Now ito of the difference between the MKI and MKII I understand its suspension work and ECU maps... Are the suspension mods dramatic? Anything else to keep in mind between the two. Seen a good example here Silver MKI, 13k Miles 2004, "Pristine".

Anything to look out for on these I also hard of PCCB troubles? How do you detect issues?

I don't want a 996TT as the fuel range is too low and I want PCCB's... also I want a more hardcore car since it will be a w/e track day car.

I would love a 997GT2 but alas funds are not that flush....

Hope to join you guys soon and any info advice most welcome!

Obviously any UK based guys who have something to offer please drop me a line.

Rgds Steve.

Are you sure it's a 2004 MKI? I'm pretty sure the MK II was 04 and 05

i don't think there's a MKI and MKII difference on the GT2 but it did get some small changes from factory since 04. the face is never lifted.

suspension changes including using some from the MKII GT3 dynamic aspects. u should be easy to spot the wheel difference.

If it's a 2003, it's an MKI. The MKII is the 2004-2005 model.

The differences between the MKI and MKII are:

The MKII GT2 has 483hp (355 kW) vs. 462 (340 kW). A difference of 21 hp (15 kW), which was achieved by detailed improvements to the electronic engine management maps, also yielding an increase of 20 Nm in maximum torque to 640 Nm between 3,500 rpm and 4,500 rpm.

In addition to the power output increase, the front and rear suspension was optimized as well, with modified springs/shock absorbers and brake system. The car also got an even more sensitive four-channel ABS for effective anti-lock braking.

For aesthetics, the rear wing became available in unpainted carbon fiber upon request. It weighs 2.8 kilograms less and is standard on the Clubsport version. The door mirror housings and air output slats in the front apron panel also feature a carbon look as part of this equipment package.

And last but not least, the MKII got the new GT3-style wheels, which are 8.5 inches wide at the front and 12 inches at the rear. They are shod with size 235/40 R 18 tires at the front and 315/30 R 18 at the rear.

Thanks!

This car I am looking at is an '02 ... with 13k miles - it was barely driven... extraordinarliy low miliage.

There is MKII available for less cash but with around 22k miles...

Anything specific to watch out for on these cars guys - I heard some PCCB issues? Also can you confirm there is no traction control?

How does handling compare to the GT3 / 996TT?

Traction control was never offered on the 996 GT2.

I'd buy more on condition than on spec. With 22k miles, the MKII is still pretty low in mileage department! I'd take it to a specialist and have him perform a PPI, throughly checking the car and reporting on any issues with the PCCB.

If set up right, the GT2 is a track monster! The stock Michlien Pilot Sport didn't really do any favors so these would be the first thing that I would change.

My modded GT2 experience has been with a RUF 550 modded GT2 and, to me, that is more than enough power. Anymore and it would be scary and not enjoyable in the least.

Good luck with the decision!

OK so I am torn between an '04 996GT2MKII and a ~'07 997TT with <10k miles... the 997GT2 is the perfect fit, but I cannot justify the price jump over the 997TT here... 997TT is around 15-20% over the GT2.

I terms of handling - and "white knuckle" factor - if the old 80's 930 is a 10 and a 997Carrera4 is a 1 where do you place the 996GT2 and the 997TT?

On 997TT are PCCB's a must for the very occasional track use?

Thanks for all your help here guys, really appreciate it!

The 996 GT2 is a 7 and the 997TT (stock) is a 3.

PCCB's are not a must for the track. Just some good track pads.

It would be a hard decision between a 996GT2 and a 997TT, as both bring good (different) things to the table. Good luck with your search, 996 GT2's are some of the best bang for the buck in performance cars right now.
