imo, the 6gt3 will be faster around the track than a 7gt3. mainly because the owner will be more daring on the cheaper car. this is not to say the 6 is cheap. all i'm trying to say is they're close in performance. looks on the other hand, the 7 is miles ahead.

Newt is infamous around these parts
I have driven all the 997's including GT2 and GT3 RS. I currently own a 996 GT3 RS and tuned Cayman S (DD) and tuned 996TT. I just love de 996 RS above all, much more demanding to drive. More exclusive; sorry but when I check the parking at the Ring (germany) you approx 40-50 997 GT3 RS and 2-3 996 GT3 RS. Speaking about excusivity. I find the 997 gt3 RS not a RS in it way how its supposed to be. My god...a RS with NAV..????

here my cars:

Newt, Nav was an option so it was up the individual owner as whether he wants it or not. Mine's without it anyway.

A comment from a 996 GT3 owner

I have followed this thread with great interest. The reason that I kept my 996 GT3 and declined my RS order last year was that I wanted a "primitive" as possible Porsche. I really don't like the electronic driver's aids and the "push this button for power" stuff. (The 997 RS is sweet looking however.) I ordered mine without the A/C or radio, PCCBs, added the GT seats, etc. and got the weight under 3000lbs w/o me in the car and half tank. I like the car on the ragged edge and how it demands your constant attention.

Lastly, I like the cars smaller...each new generation 911 gets bigger and bigger.

I would "sand paper the ***** of a Bobcat" if I could get a Cayman (from the factory) that was under 3000 lbs and had 360HP. I wish Porsche would get back to their roots as opposed to following their aging account base that needs bigger cars with more creature comfort.

Here's hoping for a Cayman RS (I know...dream on!)

I like the cars smaller too, but the 911 has rarely changed its main dimensions in any significat way. I think the main changes are these for normally aspirated 911's:

1969: Longer wheelbase than 1965-1968

1973: Rear Fender flares on the RS (standard in 78+ with the SC)

1999: First water-cooled cars significantly bigger in every way

2007: GT3RS had wider rear flares

Of these, only 1999 was a really big change, imo. The change from 996 to 997 had no size change at all besides bumper covers and wider rear on GT3RS...

Sorry but that does not mean anything. Since when has the price of the car decided how someone would push a car? Maybe in some cases, but that is a VERY bold statement to make in general.....Tons of people push expensive cars and some do not push their far less expensive cars....I have a 6GT3 and I am willing to bet I push it as hard if not harder than people with far cheaper cars. Sorry the argument does not work in the grand scheme of things....

Having driven a 997 GT3 and having raced in my 996GT3 this is what I can say...

Stock for Stock the 997 GT3 feels more planted. It does not have the bump steer feeling that the 996 GT3 had. The 997 GT3 also has SLIGHTLY more grunt (but nothing astronomical). Brakes are very similar in my opinion. The interior and overall looks of the 997 GT3 are I think light years ahead (I think this is generally the case between all 997 and 996 models). What I do not like about the 997 GT3 is that I feel like its lost a little of its hardcore track car feeling. The TC, the navi (in a lot of them), the plush interior, all comes with great perks for the street, but when it comes to a track car, I like simplicity (but this all comes down to personal taste). I know Porsche has to improve all of the creature comforts to stick with competition, but I am just saying for me, the simpler the better with a track car (again this is all personal, I personally think the 993 was the best of the best, but Porsche has to sell cars to people other than hardcore track nuts as well).....

With all of that being said. For the price difference the 996 GT3 offers a lot more right now. I have yet to ever been caught by a 997 GT3 on any track. A well setup 996 GT3 (with suspension mods, extra set of wheels, bars, harnesses, etc etc) can be had between 65-70k right now. That is a 35k plus savings over a 997 GT3. In no way is the 997 GT3 a better car by that amount of money. If you are looking for a track toy, the 996 GT3 is one hell of a buy at todays prices.

For price/perf, I know it's blasphemy per the thread title :-) but the 996TT's are on the market for table scraps, for a mostly street, occasional track car, it certainly seems interesting.

I doubt I'd take mine to the track (I have a 996 Cup for that) but I still find this a fascinating discussion for street cars. I'm currently leaning towards a 996TT because of the incredible bargains available, and again I have a full track car and race schedule, so I don't need the (admittedly) more purist sensibilities of the GT3 versus the TT.

The 997GT3 would of course make a great street-only car, but I have a pretty hard time justifying the price/perf difference to a low miles 03 or 04 996TT for say $50-60K.

I know I've stepped into a hornets nest given this is a GT3 thread, but I have multiple nomex suits to wear, so I'm ready for it :-)

I was fortunate to have driven a 997 GT3 RS, albeit it was not at the track but the steering was effortless in the 997 with less feedback.

You should hear the RS 29's when the temperature goes below 40 degrees. I just swapped those out for some Porterfield street pads. Then it snowed. Maybe I can try them out in a couple of weeks . . .

Ya actually when I was running them ambient temp was in the mid 40's. It's beyond insane. I just swapped with OEM's. Super easy, and much much better.
