996 GT3 vs 997 GT3
So let me know your opinion re the 996 vs 997---which do I want? the 996 is very stealthy with no fender swell, it's just another p-car goin' down the road. 997, how much improvement in technology leap, and suspension? thanks bma2

And i'm a bit bias but the 6 GT3 is definitely not just another P-car going down the road. Especially when you have a nice big RS wing and Cup style exhaust.

BTW Mooty, you need to update your avatar and show me how to swap my pads. These RS19/29's are making my ears bleed on the streets!

That assessment is stock for stock (with equal tires and the usual safety gear).

I didn't think he'd ever been on a track in a car w/out motons...but, then, he puts them in and takes them out so quick he might have got confused!

I know for sure he ran both his most current RS and 6 GT3 without them. The cars are very close. This past weekend at SP I know a pro driver who ran in the 1:50's along with CJ in their RS's on Hoo-hoo's. Both are relatively stock. Dave ran the same times (1:49.9999 actually) on NT-01's and Motons the same weekend. CJ is extremely fast and will most likely be running in the 1:37's soon at LS and from what i know Jeff R. ran a 1:37 on Cups in his stock 6 GT3 and i'm sure Dave is right there as well. That all being said i know for sure no one at TH is running under 2 minutes with a stock 7 GT3, yet. Ya, for a car that will see a good amount of track time, like Mooty said, unless you have A LOT of money to throw away, it's no where near worth it, yet.

The 997 GT3 is too heavy, way too heavy. Most of the weight comes from the chassis and suspension.
It handles better than the 996 GT3, but it is and it feels heavier. It looks better. The brakes are better balanced. It pushes more. It is more comfortable.
With $10k on suspension upgrades, a 996 GT3 eats any stock 997 GT3 anywhere. The price difference between these two cars is over $40k.
1.5 secs faster on a 2 minutes racetrack is about right, the difference is about 0.5 secs to 0.75 secs per 60 secs of track time, assuming same tires on stock sizes for each car.
996 GT3 has a stronger body (all steel), compared to the plastic/aluminum/steel hybrid 997 GT3. The suspension on the 997 GT3 is stronger (thicker uprights, extra braces, etc), it has a stiffer body structure but not a stronger one (for accidents protection), let alone an open top.
-997 sounds and looks better
-both have the same pace on acceleration
-996 has better weight
-997 has better brakes and suspension
-996 is better for autoX
-997 is better for track and street
-996 has a better LSD
-997 has TC
-997 has better ergonomics
-996 gives better feedback
For me personally, I won't consider a 997 GT3 because of the mandatory sunroof. So it's either the 996 GT3 or 997 GT3 RS, and the price difference is something like (2) 996 GT3 for the price of one 997 GT3 RS.
Is the 997 GT3 RS worth (2) 996 GT3? I don't think so.

996 vs.997
I have had both and I find the 997 Much more "usable" for me. I do road trips and track days. I agree with others who say not a great gap between the two for 9 tenths track use but if you are doing 600 to 900 mile trips out west like I do there is a BIG gap in comfort. 16000 miles on 997gt3 and 20000 on 05gt3.
