Question for GT3 owners...

Whats going on guys? As a car enthusiast i've always been loaded with curiousity when marques like Porsche bring out an updated version of their potent GT cars so I have to ask...with so many of you out there with modified and excellent performing mkI 997 GT3's & RS's what would make owners like you make the switch for a mkII GT3? I'd appreciate any feedback from owners & tuners a like for a question thats been in my head for ages. Thanks in advance guys.

GT3 experience

Up until last year I have owned nothing but aircooled Porsche's. The last one was a 74 Carrera with an RS engine.

The 996 GT3 I have now is just amazing. I can't imagine more power for a street car application. The 997 version may have more of the techno stuff, but I just can't imagine improving upon that howling whine to 8000. As it is, there are always these people in front of me who are backing up in to my lane, or so it seems.

There really isn't enough open road to use more power in most built up areas.

I would pull the trigger on a new RS with PDK and more HP.

^ Sadly, I hope PDK stays away from the GT cars.

I think the 7.1GT3 is a great car still. The new one might be better in a few ways, but I wouldn't "upgrade" unless I had a ton of spare cash. For the price (especially when the new one is out), 7.1 is a much better value.

Well, I just bought my 997.1 GT3, so I plan on keeping it awhile. I would love to have the newer one, but I simply did not want to wait for the thrill of a GT3. If I was to upgrade to anything, I would rather do an 07-08 RS than a 997.2 GT3.

The current gt3/RS is so competent that the change is not worth it, at least for me.

Ditto.

The car industry likes to get people worked up and make you feel like you have to upgrade. 20hp, a few minor cosmetic changes, and some features that will go almost unused, are VERY minor differences between 997.1 and 997.2 GT3s. 99.9% of the car is the same and it is already enough to handle.

I'm content with what I have. And being content makes me happy.

I made a similar mental comparison between the 997.1GT3RS and the 997.2GT3 and came to a different conclusion. I'm curious why you'd rather have the RS.

For me the new GT3 is more attractive with its 3.8L (last of the GT1 Metzgers motors most likely), better seats (GT2), no sunroof, lighter 2-piece flywheel, cool centerlock wheels, lifting suspension, bigger 2-piece iron rotors, factory mesh over the intakes, lower price (compared to current GT3RS values), etc.

I am quite pleased with my current 7GT3, and the mods that I have made improve on an already great product. The new 7GT3 simply doesn't offer enough added gains to justify the trade for me. That being said... theft, stuffing it into a wall, or a similar natural disaster would see me pull the trigger on a 2009 GT3RS, but then again I would probably just look into a cup car at that point.

I somewhat agree. So far I have added about $20K into my RS with the carbon 997 GT3 seats, sharkwerks bypass, RS98 wheels. The new 997.2 GT3 is a better value. However, it will still cost around $130K for a 'loaded' one with all the options. I'd likely take a loss on the sale depending on how far RS values fall. At least the GT3 doesn't have the widebody fenders of the RS or the wide carbon wing . I might consider a new RS if it could be had with PDK with paddles (no buttons).

I agree. I think when the test results become available on the new GT3, people will realize how much more "value" the new GT3 has over the RS. I predict that there will be significant improvements in the performance of the new GT3 compared to the current GT3/RS.

So, if F1 makes the rumored change back to manual gearboxes at some time in the near future, would you change back?
