another GT2 vs GTR test...

...this time from the latest issue of Motor magazine (Oz publication)

sorry for crap images, i was too lazy to scan so i took photos with my camera...

pretty good, well balanced article. highest praises for both cars, while noting that they are very different animals, and the GT2 definitely the much stronger performer, albeit at a stratospheric premium vs the Nissan.

they gave 10/10 to the Porsche, and 9/10 to the GTR.

also did head to head on a racetrack, where the GT2 was clearly faster than the GTR. the GTR was only faster in one corner/section of track in fact.

interesting too the below chart. we all know that the GTR gets its impressive acceleration due to a combination of the trick dual clutch tranny, excellent AWD system, sticky tires, and aggressive gear ratios. but this chart graphically illustrates how much lower geared the GTR is-- between 20-30kmh lower in each gear...

Very cool article, but I dont know if it was a fair comparison, the GTR is a big 4 seater AWD leather-clad techno-extravaganza, whereas the GT2 is a stripped down track-biased PSC-draped engineering marvel, not to mention the price difference.

I think it needs to be recognised that the R35 GTR performs a role that has no direct Porsche equivalent.

... go GT2!

According to Nissan this car should be able to slaughter a GT2 and beat a CGT around a track.

Where does Nissan say that? Nissan tested the car against a 997TT and used the TT in a comparison almost all the time. It never went against a GT2/CGT.

Waiting on this claim to "slaughter" the CGT/GT2.

AWARD-WINNING NISSAN GT-R ACHIEVES NEW RECORD LAP TIME AT NURBURGRING CIRCUIT

TOKYO (May 14, 2009) - The NISSAN GT-R, winner of the 2009 World Performance Car of the Year, has improved its lap time at the renowned Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany to 7min 26 seconds 70 on April 23.

This new time underlines Nissan engineering team’s commitment to constantly challenge the GT-R’s performance. Previous recorded lap times at the ‘Ring’ were:

- 7 minutes 27 seconds 56 on April 15, 2009
- 7 minutes 29 in April 2008
- 7 minutes 38 in September 2007

"This record demonstrates our commitment to the continuous evolution of the Nissan GT-R," says Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer and Chief Vehicle Specialist. "We would like to continue delivering the passion and pride of ownership to our customers by improving its performance every year."

I have both a CGT and GTR, and you really can't compare the two at all. They both rock. :-)

If the GTR wasn't so ugly there'd probably be a lot more supporters.

Even though the GT2 is faster... it should be... it's more than twice the price of a GTR.

I know a lot about the GT-R and can comfortably tell you guys it's one of the greatest, safest and versatile sports cars in the world. There is a huge amount of engineering behind it. It will be many years before Porsche or Ferrari can match the performance, especially with the GT-R's unique engine/transmission split.

Yeah the GTR is held in very high regard by most. It might not always seem like it here on 6speed but you're right. Porsche is struggling to keep it's ultimate affordable sports car image just because of one 1st gen model from Nissan.

Now with a much cheaper car that is better all around except for very subjective factors like "feel" and "soul" it's tougher for Porsche to sell cars when for so long they've been the budget supercar company in the shadows of Lambo and Ferrari.

What very high regard by most? Most people know thats its a great performer but there are many cars that perform far better, especially on the track. Porsche is one manufacturer with allot of street and track cred, this is why there are many racing series with Porsche cars. Porsche has never been about affordable sportscars those tags belong to the Corvette ZR1 and the Viper ACR, both of these cars are far better performers than the GTR.

What about weight? Refinement? Fit/finish? Dealer service? A recent statistic stated 70% of GT3s are tracked. There is a very good reason for that.

The Spec-V's price blows both your statements out of the water.

People said the same thing about the Z-06. It has it's place, it's amazing, but it didn't put Porsche or Ferrari in the red...

Is this the system that makes the transmissions fail when driven too hard for too long?

I have been to the track a number of times, and every time GTR's are there, one goes home with a transmission problem. The last one to go, the owner had someone deliver his 997GT3 to the track to finish the day off!

When they work, my god they are fast, but I prefer to do the entire day, not just the first half.
