Porsche GT3 RS laps Ring

New Porsche 911 GT3 RS laps the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a rather quick time

By Chris Harris
26th October 2009

Porsche loves the low key approach to Nordschleife time-attacks, and last week's session to see what the new 997 GT3 RS could manage was no exception.

Armed with a stopwatch, a crash hat, an RS and a sizeable pair of *********, an unnamed Porsche test driver clocked a 7min33sec lap - that's seven seconds faster than the cooking GT3. He did this in some light traffic, and pulling data from earlier laps showed that the theoretical 'best lap' would have been 7m30s.

That compares to the Nissan GT-R’s 7m27.56s, while quicker lap records lie with the Gumpert Apollo (7m11.57s) and Radical SR8LM (6m48s), the latter a time that we help set a couple of months ago. Watch the video here.

Not that Porsche cares too much about the relative speed of the competition, or that the Corvette ZR1 and Nissan GT-R have all gone faster. I tried to coax them into making a few catty comments about the Americans and the Japanese, but it seems they've had enough of that banter.

There's one question I'd like answered though - what's the longevity of these road cars at such insane speeds. I mean, how many laps can a 1740kg GTR do sub-7m30s before the brakes melt and the tyres go pop? Likewise the 'Vette. I reckon we should push for a 4-lap challenge from now on. Were it possible, I reckon the Porsche might just get the job done.

It amazes me that Porsche makes these better every year. Will they ever hit a wall in developing the 911 concept? I mean really with that engine hanging out the back. Its just amazing how well this thing works. And they can take such a beating.

I ran 54 laps of the Ring with the Gen.1 and it was superb. I will do the same with the Gen 2. Needless to say, 7.30 was not my time.More like 8.30.

This must be the best time for any street going Porsche. Is this faster than the Carrera GT time?

Thats amazingly it is so close. Who would have thought we'd see a 911 street car at these times just a few years ago. I'm sure someone will beat that CGT # soon.

I can't imagine such. I'm sure it will in fact be the fastest street porsche to lap the Ring. Especially without traffic.

+1, I'll take an RS any day of the week over an ACR. At least the RS has some comfort unlike the ACR.

Dodge shipped two ACR's over to the 'Ring just to see what the ACR could do, and it set new records starting from the second hot lap and the eventual 7:22.1 was set in its 4th of 5th hot lap, with no prior development work ever at the 'Ring!!! Dodge's engineers said they could have gotten into the teens if given another day. And if you watch the ACR's 'Ring video, you'll see a few misshifts and the car bouncing off of its rev limiter numerous times and still got the 7:22.1 time. Then time ran out for the private session and they had to pack up and go home. All this is done with gearing that was chosen to achieve certain gas mileage goals (3:08 ratio) also, so the potential of the ACR on 'Ring could be deep into the teens. The red/black car was the one that was driven, the picture below is me standing next to the other car over there.

wow, I'm wondering if they are going to ever make a 8 cylinder engine, or keep pushing crazy numbers out these 6 cylinder engines? Anyone know?
