I have a question for you guys running slicks on track wheels. Are all of you trailering to the track? I'm assuming you're not driving your car out on the street with these tires, correct?

I'm going to have a dedicated set of track tires and wheels but not a trailer. I need something in 18" to drive to the track, lap, and then drive home. With a roll bar in the car there's no way to carry a set with me.

On my 996 turbo I ran stock hollow-spokes with MPSC's. I found the tire to be decent but a set of rears would barely make a weekend and I'd be a bit puckered on the way home. I've been leaning towards dedicated R888's as they're supposed to have close to the same grip as the cups but a much longer tire life. I don't care about the noise.

Anyone running 18" RA-888's? If so, what sizes are you running?

cups in 235-35-19 / 305-30-19 vs re-11 in same sizes:

cups: f 20 lbs, r 27lbs
re-11: f 27 lbs, r 32lbs.

thats 24 pounds heavier per set! thats more than enough to offset any light wheel option you might have mounted to your car. everyone knows weight is critical to performance especialy when its located in the outer most portion of a spinning wheel.

if bridgestone cant figure out how to reduce this weight, what else have they not figured out with their tires. i say leave the tires for the french, its their specialty.

True, but it's all about cost vs benefit when you're talking about driving in DE's and not racing. If, and that's a big IF, the RA-888 gave you 50% to 75% more track time per buck, when concidering cost and longevity, then the few 1/10ths of a second a lap I'd loose probably won't cost me any addition prize money.

BTW, I'm in Fort Worth now and I don't recognize your avatar from any place around these parts!

Still need to know the ideal tire sizes for 18" wheels with 8.5" and 12" widths?

Anyone?

the stock wheels/tires are as follows.
235/35/19 = 25.5"
305/30/19 = 26.3

you need to pick 18" tires in sizes that closely mimick this ratio.

your front 18 is going to be a 235 or 245 and people use either a 305 or 315 with the appropriate profile for the rear

235-40-18
305-35-18 for starters and then depends on what brand tires you're looking into

i m still on PS2 for street, cant complain at all for DD...very good tires in fact.
treadwear rating is 220+, this tire just cant get bald..damn..
but I am definitely all in for the RE11 when time to change...it is about 35 pct cheaper...

My other car is on RE01R, the predecessor of RE11. It's great for DD and light track use..Can imagine the RE11 is gonna be better

Can only comment on RE11s and PS2's. I don't track but think it's the best place for 10/10ths. On hot roads the RE11 get really sticky to the point of becoming slippery when worked hard. The life of RE11's tyre was 3,500km's, driving hard. The PS2's don't get hot enough for my liking. On the RE11's my car was glued and always stayed on the road, the PS2's have let me down twice. I have done over 4,000km on the PS2 and they still look good. That worries me because I feel they are too durable and don't share enough with the road. I won't be replacing with PS2s. I have read great things about Korean Hankook tyres on this site in the 997 section. It may be worth looking there for idea.
