INTRO & your $.02 please..... on purchasing 997 GT3

Hello everyone, my name is John and im from NORCAL.

ive been a lurker here since the introduction of the 997 GT3 and am now in the market for one.

i am looking for a carrera white gt3, but the problem i am having is should i get a 10 gt3 or should i get an 07-08gt3 rs?

i love the looks and improvements of the 997.2 gt3, but i love the looks and limited number of 997.1 gt3rs.

the car will be my daily driver and and my commute time is 5-10 minutes depending on which fire house i will be working that day. i will be moving a duffelbag of clothes/toiletires and my fire gear if i take overtime at another firehouse.

there is a 10 gt3 available at my nearest dealeship in carrera white with red brakes, but man...... i am torn to get an 07-08 gt3 rs with pccb.

is it better to get either with red or pccb brakes as a daily driver?

if you were in my shoes, what would you choose?

TYIA,
John

Even though the RS is really intended for track use - or more so than the GT3 - I love that car and hope to make the step up someday. I'd vote for the RS, but the margin is very slim, the 2010 is sweet. Toss a coin, either way, you'll have a hell of a ride!

Are you strictly going to use it as a daily driver?

Or do you have any track days planned?

For a DD car it makes more sense to get the 997.2 GT3. Also you won't have a roll bar at the rear so you can put your bags in the back

The RS is designed more for the track, so driving it on the street might be harder.

Well, the reason I ask if it will strictly be a DD is, if he is never going to track the car, then perhaps there are other 911 models that would better suit him.

Jbigelow_1, don't inhibit your options because each one offers something unique and fun in its own sense.

well i guess another angle is to discuss your "tear up"

surely you will pay less for an 07/08 RS than a new 10 GT3? and the resale on an RS in future would likely be higher on an RS than a normal GT3,

so perhaps from that perspective an older RS makes more "sense" financially?

but as far as use, i havnt driven the new 997.2 GT3 so couldnt comment.

but no matter what you decide, just make sure to enjoy it

Lot of good questions/comments above. Do you have another daily driver? If you're only driving the car 5-10 mins to and from work each day and putting wear and tear carrying your gear in it, I'd suggest you get a cheap daily and save the GT3 for evenings/weekends/trackdays. You're not going to enjoy it much on such a short drive to/from work anyway.

For a DD only, I would only get either a very very low mileage 07/08 GT3 or a 10Gt3...no RS....And I would get the PCCBs

the MK1s will be cheaper - there are several available <6k miles
the MK2 will be a nice car but still premium priced...and a little more refined than a Mk1

TY TY for the warm welcome and the replies.........

the gt3 will be a daily driver....i want to enjoy the car and drive it as much as possible.

i will be putting around 7000 miles per year on the car.

also, i told the wife that this will be the last sports car ever that i will purchase, so this will be a keeper for me guys/gals. so i want this car to be a memorable one.

i've owned many cars and my favorite was the BMW e30 M3s that i have owned (black, red, and white)... i now regret selling my white BMW e30 M3.

it was a true drivers car and i want that feeling again with the GT3.

keep the discussions going......and TY in advance

here are pix of a few cars i have owned....

MY last BMW e30 M3 (the GT3 will take her place)

2003 Nissan 350Z

2004 Mitsubishi Evo

2006 Mercedes SL500 (current vehicle)

For your intended use, you should buy the car that meets your cost perimeters and is the most appealing in terms of style and appearance. Good luck.

I recently went through the same process with nearly the same parameters: "last sports car for 10 years", need to be able to drive to-from the office, occasional track usage, and really looking for an involving driver's car.

Here's my 2 pennies. First of all, both cars are absolutely great, you can't go wrong. I was torn between a 2007 and a used 2010. I ultimately went with a 2010 which I got a great deal on and can't be happier. I drove many 2007 and a few 2010 and I would say that if your main purpose is daily driver, the 2010 will suit you better. It feels more composed, a little less edgy, and a bit quieter (and I have the sharkwerks bypass). The 2007 felt too raw to me and the RS just wouldn't have been my cup of tea for a DD.

If you want something that is a bit more raw and on edge, go 2007 - there are a few good ones out there. If you want a car that is just as fast and fun, but can be a bit more composed on your commute, I'd recommend the 2010. Also, since you'll be keeping it for a while, get one with the features that you want.

Good luck and enjoy.

I would say test drive them. If the dealership won't let you testdrive an '10 then find a "friend" on the net who will let you drive one for a few miles. Another way to do an extended testdrve is one of those 1 day - 6 car driving experiences.

Personally - I think you a 997S is your best bet. If you really truely insist on getting a GT3/RS then I would say get a '07 RS with PCCB's. You really won't appreciate the benefits of the '10 vs. 07 on the street. The PCCB's will last forever on street use and the brake dust will be minimal.

P.S. - one person's "very stiff" is another person's comfortable. It all depends on the cars you have owned. I personally find my GT3 to very comfortable and an excellent DD.

GL.

Thats a pretty impressive stable you've collected there. I'm sure the GT3 will fit right in
