May 19, 2010 (Santa Ana, Calif.) – After a stellar performance at the American Le Mans Series race at Long Beach, where GMG Racing’s rookie Bret Curtis and veteran James Sofronas finished second in the GT Challenge class, the team has been eager with anticipation for the next stop on the ALMS calendar – this weekend’s American Le Mans Series at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca presented by Patron.
With two races competed in the 2010 season, Curtis and Sofronas sit third in the points standings after two events, despite being knocked out of contention at the season-opening 12 Hours of Sebring. However, the speed that the No.32 GMG / Spectra Resources Corporation showed at the 12 hour race has given the team much confidence for this weekend’s race, which will be a six-hour endurance contest.
For this race, veteran sportscar driver Terry Borcheller will join the team. Borcheller, a winner at this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, is a multi-time champion in ALMS, Grand-Am, and World Challenge, and will no doubt have the speed to help Curtis and Sofronas make another podium appearance. GMG Racing has enjoyed much success at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in the past, with Sofronas winning the World Challenge season finale at the track last year.
“Being based in Southern California, and right after the race in Long Beach, this weekend’s race is like having a second home race for us,” said Sofronas. “And it is a track that we know well and have done well at in the past. Bret is really excited, and so am I, to get back into the GT-C car after Long Beach, which was a great result for us but also a really, really fun race. Bret drove well, the team was awesome in the pits, and we are all really motivated to do well this weekend. Having Terry join us for the weekend will definitely help our effort.”
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is also popular destination for the customers of GMG, strengthening the link between the race program and customer service and parts offered at GMG’s shop in southern California. That being the case, there will once again be a strong contingent of GMG’s customers trackside for the six-hour.
“The amount of response that we got in Long Beach was almost overwhelming,” said Fabryce Kutyba, VP of Global Motorsports Group. “It was great to see our customers come out and support our race programs and even better to put on a great show and get a podium result. We are really looking forward to this weekend and to watching Bret and James put in another great drive.”
GMG Racing will also have its World Challenge program at rounds four and five of that championship at Mosport International Raceway. After the race is over, Sofronas will jump on an airplane to contest Sunday’s World Challenge race.
The American Le Mans Series Monterey presented by Patron will be broadcast on CBS Sports on May 29, at 1:30pm ET. However, fans of GMG Racing can watch the race live via the American Le Mans series website at www.americanlemans.com. The race will begin on Saturday at 2:30 PST and finish at 8:30 PST.
