Is the GT3 for me?
#33
I asked this same question on the GTR sub-forum. I know this is predominantly a Porsche forum but I'd figured I'd get more than 3 responses. I have also joined NAGTROC.com for more info.
I started a thread on my initial search/buying info about the 997.1 GT3 a couple of months ago but then a friend told me to check out the Nissan GTR due to the same price range and I stopped dead in my tracks b/c I am at a crossroads for both cars like the OP.
This feels like the hardest decision for me! lol. I don't want to "pick" the wrong car. I know both cars are awesome in their own way but geez....this is a TOUGH choice for me right now! lol
to the OP- I'm in the same boat as you. Let me know what you choose and why.

Again, it all comes down to if you track you car and if so, how hard and how often..
Go to a local track event and you will see tons of GT3's and an occasional GTR. The GTR is faster if driven weel by an amature, just like I suspect that a 997TT is faster.
The difference is the feel and durability, I love Turbo cars on the road, but for the track NA only. A GT3 is very linear, very involving. Nothing feels better in your hands at the limit than a GT3 and you know they will be easy on pads, rotors and last while taking track beatings weekend after weekend.
With the GTR I am not so sure it will hold up, but time will tell.

Gt3
I have a 650 +HP 996tt and test drove a couple of 997 GT3.1's last week. I am trying very hard to convince myself its better than my current car on the street. The Gt3 felt much slower than my car as expected, the power is very linear and lacks the thrust i am used to. But i love the tightness, high revving nature , sound .shifter ,brakes and everything else.
The only thing which worries me is ..maybe it lacks the grunt for the street or lets say i may get bored. I know most here say that's impossible. The Gt3 is low on TQ and makes HP very high up in the RPM...it really takes a lot of work to feel the power but i am sure on the track a momentum car is much better.
I am confused! Very tempted to buy a 997 Gt3 but cant seem to give up my turbo. Maybe once i buy a gt3 and dont ever drive a tuned turbo..i will never think about power again.
My options at this point are spend about 7 k and get KwV3, LSD,RWD on my 996tt..which i am sure will lap much faster than a stock 997gt3...or just get a Gt3 and call it a day.

As an add-on to the above comments, I've had great experiences in my former Turbo(GT700, susp., brake mods), GT3 (modded w/exhaust and suspension components and regeared)and GT2 (modded w/GT700 and susp. goodies). Note the succession of GT cars after my Turbo. Try as I might, I just could not modify it for the lightness and handling feel that the GT cars possessed. Most recently, I tried the GTR (2010 modded breathing, ecu-w approx 650hp). All were terrific rides but the GT3 stood out for it's viseral handling feel, even though it was the least powerful car. The GT2 was monster that could spin it's tires in 3rd while driving on the freeway. Even with suspension and LSD mods, I had to use caution driving it quickly-was fun though. The GTR is a great DD car with a very firm ride but fairly practical for my use and very easy to drive fast or slow. I was amazed by it's overall performance given it's size and weight. If I wanted to track it more, I'd need some other enhancements for reliability but had absolutely no issues while I had it. I recently sold the GTR and use my E90 M3 for my DD and have ordered a .2 GT3RS expected to arrive next month. As others have said, the GT3 is for those who place a premium on driving feel and interaction. Of the cars mentioned above, my most memorable experience was from a short (2mile) winding road just a couple of miles from my house in the GT3. Essentially, the car just felt hardwired to my senses and I simply felt awed by the visceral interaction. I fact, there were a few moments like this with the GT3(996version). I don't know how Porsche did it with this car but had to have it again and would have never sold it if I knew what I know now. The relative lack of torque compared to the others was really not an issue for me since I'm not big on stoplight drags and enjoy downshifting when necessary. The turbo cars excelled in the torque dept. but I prefer the GT3's overall attributes better(having both is really the way to go!) I expect to keep this new one for a while. Good luck with your choice.

I actually plan for my next car to have a third pedal. My last three cars (Lexus IS-F, BMW M3 DCT and the GT-R) have all had two pedals and paddles and I am starting to miss driving a stick. I know I will be giving up some performance that these modern transmissions offer, but a manual Porsche has been on my wish list since before I could drive.
