996 GT3 / RS vs 997 GT3 / RS

Hello all. This is my first post on here and I'm sorry if its a repeat subject.

I'm seriously looking to purchase a used GT3. I would like to get a RS but not sure I want to layout the coin right now. Need money for business. This would be my first Porsche. I'm looking for a car to drive to the track and use on the track. Not too often, but at least 8-10 times per year. at this time I do not want to trailer a car to the track. I'm not looking to race.

So the question is this, is it a big difference between the 996 GT3 and the 997 GT3 ? and the 996 RS and 997 RS? Being my first Porsche, I'm sure I would not know the difference. I just want to get the better handling car without making too many mods for the track and still be able to drive it around town ( maybe 3-4 k per year).

Thanks and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Big difference between the 996 and 997 is styling and some driver error safety devices. 997.1 is more livable

There is a low mileage 997.1 GT3 on Autotrader for high 70's.....that is a good buy

Benefits of RS 997.1
-Rare, better future resale
-wider rear end (if you like that...I don't) and better wing (can be added at later date for big cost)
-light weight flywheel
-no sunroof (nice for a track only car)

Disadvantages of RS 997.1
-Cost
-Track insurabce cost more for a RS than a non RS

I went for a 997.1 GT3.....I could not justify the extra cost

As for a 997.2 GT3 RS.....hand down better than a standard GT3, but cost a bunch more than these cars

Izzone,

Thanks for the great report. I know of a nice 08 GT3 with roll cage and very low miles. I'll also check out autotrader on the 997.1 GT3. Looks like a great deal. The cheapest 997.1 RS I have seen is $95K.

you will take less of a depreciation bath on a well purchased RS if that is of any concern

Today I did a test drive of the 997 GT3. Loved the car. I'm not sure if I would want to spend the extra money for the RS. I have never driven a RS before but I think the GT3 will fit my bill at this time. Now I have to decide if I want a 996 or 997.

Has anyone driven both? any input would be helpful.
