996 GT2 or 997.1 GT3 - Advice..

Having some change of heart for the .1 GT3 I wanted to get. I love the GT2's, everything about them. Both used are in the same price range.

I wanted some advice and help from experts and people who have driven both. Or own one...

What do you guys prefer.

Either car I choose will be 50/50 for street/track use.

Which one will be better for the long run. I plan on keeping it forever and modding it.

Well if you decide to go with the 6GT2 this is your best option.

Since you want to mod it I guess it would depend on what you're trying to get out of your mods. Not many engine mods you can do to the 3 minus the Sharky 3.9. Most of the mods for the 3 are with the track in mind since most of them are suspension bits. If you want go fast mods then the GT2 takes the cake, and from your user name it looks like you are more of a turbo guy. There are still plenty of suspension mods you could do to the GT2 to get it near or the same level of handling as the 3. Kinda sounds like I want a GT2 huh?

Also take into consideration the 3 probably has remaining warranty while the 2 doesn't. I say test drive them both and which ever one steals your heart wins.

Dude, I was actually looking at this. I would have the decals off though. And Why did you get 6gt3?

Decals are from the One Lap (2nd overall) and 2009 UTCC (fastest street legal car) and the only decals left on the car are on the windows. I got the GT3 to go back to SCCA Stock Autocross as the GT2 as modded doesn't have a competitive class. I got an E36M3 for the track to run NASA Time Trials in TTC.

The GT2 was purchased to take a run for the overall win in the 2009 One Lap. Cone Penalties @ BMW Center cost us a chance for the overall win.

some say the GT3 is better suited for the track.
I knew that I needed to have my fix for boost and torque do the turbos were a must, so I went with the GT2.
based on reviews and opinions on here, I preferred to "lose" a bit of sharpness in lieu for a lot more torque and power.
Look at it this way - the turbos you use and feel on every drive. the little bit you lose (if at all...) in sharpness and throttle modulation in turns, you have to be an expert driver to notice...

I had an 08 Turbo with suspension, chip, exhaust etc and ended up trading it in for an 08 GT2. I drove a GT3 RS prior to finding the GT2 and loved the handling etc. but I was disappointed with the straight line acceleration compared to the turbo. Then the GT2 became available and it was the best of both worlds. It is faster in a straight line than my turbo was and the handling is excellent. It is a DD for me and I plan on tracking it this summer. I have had various Corvettes, a 930 Porsche with track work done to it, an M3 an M5, a 993 turbo and 997 turbo and this GT2 is head and shoulders above all the others.
I have also driven a Ferrari 430, Lambo Gallardo Superleggera, Callaway Corvette, Audi R8, etc and feel that the GT2 is the best car I have ever driven. If you have the chance, go for the GT2.

I have experience with both cars and would highly recommend the 996 GT2.
My decision boiled down to the return on power modifications:

997 GT3: Cup Diff, Lighter Flywheel, ECU retune and free-flow exhaust = 11k, +35hp, & perhaps 3/10ths quicker to 62mph.

996 GT2: K24/18g upgrade, lighter flywheel, ECU retune and straight pipes = 10k, +175hp, 8/10ths quicker to 62mph.

For the street the GT2 really is much more fun to drive (620+ hp). For the track, while the power is fun I have found the GT2 a bit more of a handful than the GT3, although its nothing that you wont be able to get used to.

This issue has been discussed many times on this forum, I recommend you do a search.
