Hey Ben,

How many miles do you have on your GT and how bad do you need new tires?

2400. the rears are pretty much at wear bar and the fronts are getting very close. however, i think they've been heat cycled about as many times as they should because even the fronts are starting to get slick. don't worry about it though chuck, i'm certain you will get considerably more out of yours. i only hope porsche doesn't try to void my warranty should something happen based on inferences from my tire wear (if that were the case, they must think my wife was out tracking her cayenne daily ). i've given a crapload of people "full monty" rides and a few have turned around and bought CGTs as a result. several more that haven't will as soon as prices drop some more. i think they'll be cool as long as they have CGTs to sell - especially since my referrals have resulted directly in sold CGTs, but i do worry some after they're all sold. it would be ironic and disappointing if such assistance in moving their cars results in trouble dealing with any troubles mine may end up having some day. not everyone could get to leipzig for a test ride and very few dealers are allowing test drives.

2400 miles YEOW!!!! I remember on one of my 993TTs I only got about 7000 miles out of the rear tires and I thought that was bad...

Well, the good news is that I am only at 320 miles, so it will be awhile until I need some (unless they dry-rot first) <gr>

You should be asking Porsche for a commission!!!

if it's any consolation to you as regards potential tire wear, i went through 4 full sets in 16k miles and 4 years on my last 911. the car was always warmed to operating temp before exceeding 4200 RPM, i religiously adhered to routine maintenace suggestions, and had zero type 2 overrevs which is likely why the car was so good to me (as was my 911 before it) despite "driving" it.

that said, the CGT manual says to replace the tires at 4 years even if they aren't worn out.

Ben -- What is a type 2 overrev -- I have heard much about "overrevs" in the past but have never been able to understand how they are categorized - I think a type 1 is when you downshift at speed and really redline it.

I have hit the rev limiter several times in my Stage 2 TT -- is that considered an overrev of any Type?

Thanks.

hitting the rev limiter is a type 1 and no big deal (my 2 year old 996 had 29k of those with less than 10k miles). a type 2 IS a big deal because it only occurs via a missed downshift or spinning the car without having the clutch fully depressed. type 2s are when the RPMs to go over redline whereas type 1s do not.

Ben, where did you buy your tires from? Dealer get them? I would want only the dealer to mount them, considering those wheels.

go them from damon @ tirerack (click the tirerack sponsor link so he gets credit). yes, i am having dealer mount them. at $8k for rear and $6k for front rims, i want the dealer to be responsible.
