"Operation Safe Canyons"

CA guys watch out. this taken from NBC news & also a f-chater... thanks for the heads-up.

CHP Unveils Traffic-Safety Program Targeting Illegal Street Racing
Authorities Thursday unveiled a traffic-safety program for the Santa Monica Mountains designed to target the problems of illegal street racing and other unsafe driving practices in the area near Malibu.

Dubbed "Operation Safe Canyons," the enforcement effort will be conducted by teams of California Highway Patrol officers and Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies, said CHP Officer Leland Tang.

"On weekends, there is an increase of recreational vehicles, motorcycles, high-performance vehicles and bicyclists using these roadways," Tang said. "This increase in vehicular traffic creates a higher than normal demand for service calls and enforcement."

Tang said that the area's mountainous canyon roads "provide an environment for some motorists to engage in high-speed racing and other unsafe driving practices."

He said an increasing problem has been the organization of illegal events by use of the Internet.

Among the problems in the area:

Motorcycles and other vehicles being driven recklessly on Mulholland Highway, past the residential community west of Decker Canyon.

Motorcycles and other vehicles racing on Stunt Road.

High-performance vehicles racing into the early hours of the mornings on Stunt Road and neighboring canyon roads.

Motorcycles and other vehicles traveling in the wrong direction on Tuna Canyon Road while driving in a reckless manner.

And various instances of motorists driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

"Our goal is to create and maintain an environment that promotes a safe and enjoyable use of the Santa Monica Mountains region for all," Tang said.

Also involved in the program will be Assembly Member Fran Pavley's office, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky's office, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.

Yea, they did a hard hit on Angeles Crest about 5 years ago. Things have calmed down up there a lot though, police travel isn't as abundant. If you get up there early and on to the back roads quick it's clear forever.

Racing on public roads is idiotic, not to mention dangerous for those racing and innocent bystanders.

"Spirited driving" can be dangerous, but I personally can't say too much about it, given I like to engage in it whenever I get the chance.

I agree with mikesmith though; best to keep it in a controlled environment i.e. track.

speaking of these drifters I was on my way home last night around 12:30 and there was a pack of japanese econoboxes, one ricier than the next, all parked in a line with their hazards flashing on the shoulder of Mulholland hwy. I didn't know this was such an issue, but apparently it is.

Operation Safe Canyons was in full effect today, CHiPs everywhere. Even had a news reporter inciting motorcyclists to pull stunts for camera when they couldn't get shots of an infamous black GT2.

Now LA County Sheriffs have implemented new rules that if they pull you over racing or 25mph over the limit they will impound the car for 30 days at 50.00/day and for racing they will now impound and sell at auction, no questions asked. So go race the Enzo or CGT up there and maybe lose the car for good.

Best to keep it on the track where it belongs and not worry about it.

ouch, what happened to the good old days of double fines

Anyone have a link to these canyon roads... or at least cross-streets that I can punch in the nav? I'd like to check them out.
