2010 Porsche GT3 oil seepage
Hi. This is my first post in here.
I am currently based in Abu Dhabi UAE, and looking into buying a 2010 GT3. The car was originally purchased in March 2011 and had been almost stationary since August.
I took the car to Porsche workshop for inspection (111-point check) and it appears that there is an oil seepage in the oil bank cover. I am no mechanical expert, but i am guessing this is the lower valve cover?
Considering that the car's odometer only reads 6,000km, I'd appreciate if anyone can explain if this is usually due to misuse and if this has any effect on the reliability of the car whatsoever (or its resale value).
Is this anything to worry about - as in stop me from buying the car?
Any input would be immensely appreciated.
George

Thanks for your reply @Thomas9181.
Indeed the vehicle was very rarely driven, particular during the last months.
Porsche service centre advised that the oil bank cover sealant requires replacement. It's a 10-hr job (engine remains in place) and would be covered by warranty. The current owner have advised them to proceed with the works.
Again, should this work affect the car's reliability or my decision on buying the car, or is it really a minor thing?

George,
For peace of mind you could also have it checked out by Alex Renner Motors in Dubai.
You may also find it of use posting on Porsche Club UAE Facebook, if there is a history lurking on any particular GT3, chances are a club member knows about it.

Which car is it you getting? I haven't seen many for sale recently, only a red one.
Car is robust and a thrill, I have a 997.1 GT3 and I drive it daily. If you buy one soon, then sign up for Porsche Club track day at Yas on 6th January.

Taffin,
Appreciate your reply and all the info.
It's a 997.2 in Arctic Silver and it seems in perfect condition.
I'm just not used to oil seepage or leaks (which appears to be a very common thing in Porsches); and not knowing the severity of such a defect [oil bank cover seep] i'm not really sure if the vehicle will be back to original condition once the sealant is replaced..
I'll be out of town on January 6th, but will look into future meets if the deal is completed.
On another note, what would be a good 997.2 GT3 deal at the present time in your opinion?
Thanks again!

take a look at some of these:
an '08, I would offer 230-240k on: http://tnydu.biz/DOhUt6
a '10, but such low km: http://tnydu.biz/DOhUFc
this is the silver one?? http://tnydu.biz/DOhMJA price is far too high, you could find an 997.2RS for a little more money, or a 997.1RS for a little less. For same money there are nice 997.1 GT2's available with low mileage
Also try Top Line motors in Ras al Khor, speak to Nader there.

Thanks for the links.
Your car seems well pampered, but it's the 997.2 i want.
I'm gonna wait till the work is done on the silver one and speak with the workshop manager. Will reconsider other options if i'm not convinced..

hi, just to clarify none of these are mine.
I have a Gen1 with black rims, which is now getting converted to clubsport spec and I am not selling my 997.... EVER!!
The red one is also a gen2, and AED50k less than the silver, and as much as I also prefer the silver..... 15% more cost not worth it in my books, plus the red one has lower mileage.
At least check out the red one and use it as a bargaining piece.
Not a great picture, but here is my car.....

Taffin,
Sorry i misunderstood your previous expression regarding the white 997.1.
I like the white combination on your car (white is right.. but can't find any 997.2 in white)... Can't see any reason why you'd sell yours anyway
I'm bargaining on the silver one at the moment. I am keeping the red one as an option (++ its low mileage); but the "ruby red" colour isn't exactly what i had in mind..

no worries. What I meant on the white, is that he is asking too much.
And don't let someone tell you a car with ceramics are worth big extra $$$$
Now if only I could find a sub 10,000km gen1 RS in green..... ahhhh to dream

RMS... common problem with GT3's Have your shop install the RMS from a TT...not an approved Porsche fix but everyone I know that has tried it says it works and won't leak again. The GT3's don't like to sit so once you fix it...drive it.

The seepage is from the valves cover seal (underneath the outlet valves cam), is this the rear main seal?
While visiting the Porsche workshop, I've noticed several engines dropped; is this something you have to live with owning a Porsche?
Unfortunately I'll be out of town right after the car is fixed and I buy it. On the positive side, this may be a good test for the new seal?
