Planned on purchasing NT-01s, but now Pirelli Trofeo
I will use these for some daily driving and ~ 10 track days in 2012. Any thoughts relative others (e.g., NT-01s)? Thanks.

For 18" wheels (my size of choice for the track):
I highly recommend the Notto R compound tires. To NOT get a CEL the only Nitto tires for the track combo is to use their NT O5 (100 tread compound) in the rear with either the 235/40/18 or 245/40/18 NT 01 (also 100 tread compound) in the front

Or use the NT01 245-40-18 front (25.55" diameter), or even better 275-35-18s (also 25.55" diameter) on front completely eliminating front understeer, with the Toyo RA-1 305-35-18 (26.3" diameter) in the rear and not have to worry about any ABS/PSM issues on the 997. Toyo makes the Nittos and the two tires are supposed be the same compound. I've put four 305 RA-1s for sale in the marketplace section (two new and two just broken in)
There's really no other option right now for streetable R-comps in 18s you can drive to the track on unless you want to chance it with Hoosiers or V710s.

I regularly use Nt01 245/315 with no issues, but wish Nitto would make the 315 in a higher profile (315/35) so that the car's "angle of attack" was not changed (rear is about 1/2" lower with 315/30)

You'll need to rotate the strut tops and bring them in. Mounted on a 9" rim like standard CCWs ET 48, it will be close, about 2mm from the springs, but it will clear. If you need you could always add a 5mm spacer. If it will rub anywhere (such as if you don't bring in the strut tops in enough or use a spacer) it would just touch the forward portion of the wheel arch on a turn in compression, and you can easily do a little pull on the fender lip with your hands here to get an additional 5mm clearance if need and clear completely.

Unlike my situation, some 997 users apparently have had issues with the NT01 in these sizes. Odd indeed that they work for some and not for others, but I am happy to be in the group that can use them. The NT01's are a great value and perform very well for a DOT approved tire.
