I looked through all my Porsche books and can't find any background information on this car? Does anyone know how many were built? What chassis was used? If they were available in the US???? Anything.

there are some specs there. I believe somewhere between 25-50 road versions were made. I don't think it was ever sold in the US and I doubt this car for sale is street legal.

I believe that Road and Track actually did a road test, and if I remember correctly top speed was like 178 because of gearing. Again from memory, the engine is forward mounted, the cold air duct totally obscures rear vision, they are very light, and they homologated the eventual Le Mans winner. I thought there were 25-26 road versions built. When I was in Germany j with a dealer friend, I almost got a ride in one (both the father and son owned one), but the battery was dead and the son didn't want to fool with it. The dealer was trying to buy it for a customer who lives in Sarasota, but they couldn't come to terms.

Here's an article on the owner:

I've heard he's a really nice guy, and I believe all the cars at WestCoastMotorsports are Gerd's cars. When I grow up, I wanta be like Gerd.

The GT1 is an amazing car, style and performance wise. It's a an extremely rare car and will always hold a spot in my dream car garage... The interior isn't too shabby either, especially considering it's a pure race car. The steering wheel is my favorite Porsche steering wheel ever! The price is very high, but you get what you pay for... It's worth it
