Unhappy Time to change suspension on my 997.1 GT3?

Greetings all,

I currently drive a 997.1 GT3 which is coming 5 years old and has 43,000km on the clock. I know it doesn't sound like much but it has been used as a daily and some of the roads here really stress the suspension quite a fair amount.

Couple of months the shocks were starting to show sign of wear. When I go over a hump and the rear sits back down, there will be a "eek-eek" sound coming from the rear, presumably from the shock boot (correct me if I'm wrong).

The front creaks and croaks regularly at very slow speed braking and when I full lock. I brought the car back to the dealer who removed all the entire suspension setup and re-installed back. They said there were a lot of loose nuts which cured the problem for a while. It's coming back again..

Do you guys recommend to change coilovers? I was looking at the V3s because the price the dealer quoted me for the stock bilsteins were ridiculous.

What should I do!

Coilovers are the best suspension solution as all the parts are crafted to fit together perfectly, as opposed to just lowering springs. With coilovers installed on your vehicle, you will notice improved handling and ride quality, as well as an incredible lowered appearance that is unrivaled.

The KW V3 coilovers offer a track worthy package for the street with its dual dampening technology. The separate and independently adjustable rebound and compression dampening allows for the end user to fine tune their suspension setup for the ultimate in handling. The unique patented system with its two-stage valves allows a rebound damping adjustment (comfort) and a compression adjustment (driving dynamics) in the low-speed range while the high-speed range which controls the driving safety, is fixed.

The Bilstein PSS Damptronic suspension kit for vehicles with PASM. This kit works directly with your car's Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system to provide the most dynamic and customizable ride-quality possible. The threaded strut body allows precise lowering from 30mm to 50mm lower than stock at front and rear. Fully corrosion resistant, and easily adjustable.

Is the car a DD only or do you see occasional track time? If DD, I would probably recommend either re-valving or replacing with stock struts. If you track, I love Moton. Absolutely wonderful dampers. Ultimately, I would check with your local shop and see what they support as support should not be under valued.

i have just under 40k kms on my 997.1 RS and my suspension is still holding up fine. the roads we have here are so much worse than that you guys have in sunny singapore.

my suggestion is to wait until you get a blown damper before replacing it with a full coil over kit.

aftermarket coilover kits are generally cheaper than getting the stock set up replaced. of course this depends on what kind of coilovers you get.

Which one would you recommend between the 2? Car will be used as a DD and some driving on B-roads.

Since your doing more street driving I would go with the the Bilstein PSS10. The PSS are manually adjustable damping mono-tube gas shock absorbers that feature 9 or 10-stage precise compression and rebound settings, from comfort to competition. The threaded body allows for accurate and custom adjustability of the front and rear progressive rate springs to achieve the vehicle ride height, center of gravity and level of performance handling desired.

  • Individual settings ranging from maximum Comfort to aggressive Sport can be selected by the twist of a dial (9 on PSS9, 10 on PSS10)
  • Threaded body adjustable range of 20 mm at both axles
  • Lowering of approx. 30-50 mm at front and rear
  • Road-tested and fine-tuned by BILSTEIN ride engineers, under extreme motorsports conditions
  • Spring plates and lock nuts made from a special aluminum alloy
  • Surface coating using Triple-C-Technology®for long-lasting corrosion resistance
  • Round threads for easy adjustment
  • Quality sport springs made from highly durable material
  • Gas pressure technology
  • BILSTEIN monotube technology, made in Germany
Remember that anytime you install coilovers to have it properly corner balanced for maximum effectiveness.

You can buy my just serviced Moton Clubsports that I am not putting on the car as I am trading up soon to an RS of some sort. 650/800's and 175 spring tenders. The entire suspension is freshened up with freshly blasted and coated springs.

The factory dampers were pretty well and often do not need to be replaced, unless of course they are worn or you are looking for an upgrade.

We generally address the components around the dampers first, eliminating the rubber bushings in the links, arms and work on more adjust-ability.

We have developed a system of components that have been proven in professional racing over the years that have been refined to work with track going road cars.

We can help you with recommendations of what works best for your intended use.

Feel free to message me directly and I will be happy to make some suggestions.

We are also a KW distributor in addition to being a development partner to JRZ and Ohlins.
