I think you just described the GT3 variants.
The 996 GT3 has similar performance to your Cayman R although the handling characteristics are different. Any of the 997 GT3's would be an upgrade. I'd go for the newest one your wallet can support.

Sounds like a 997.2 GT3 RS might be your best bet. I am not sure if you have the budget for a 4.0 and dont really think it is worth the difference in price because of how rare the 4.0 is. I would go for the RS if youre tracking 30+ times a year. If you said you were tracking 10X or less and driving on street more I would say GT2 then. Just my opinion and good luck wityh whatever you choose.

you obviously have the money to buy the gt2.. but you know that your gonna track it on a regular basis.. stepping up from the CR, why wouldnt you go straight to the RS... especially if you have the money for it..
even if you buy the gt2, your gonna eventually find yourself inside a RS..
buy the RS... so far its the best worst mistake ive made all year...
beside cramming a tpc turbo into a pdk cayman r.. which still ranks as my worst mistake for the year as well as not buying apple at 507's reversal two weeks ago. and selling a alpina b7 for a ford raptor... the list goes on..and on..
buy the rs,,, buy it now...

I like the way you make mistakes. Are you copying my moves? I also have a Raptor.

I may need to start another thread but what gives lately with people sending members here over to Rennlist to do searches. If we wanted to search Rennlist, we'd be at Rennlist.

So why was the turbo in the Cayman R a mistake?

BTW, looks like late 2013 for the 991 GT3 to be available. Will likely be a beast when it comes to lap times, but it remains to be seen whether it'll appeal to track guys - needs to be raw, not just fast! Hopefully, more info and reviews will start appearing early or mid 2013. But if it's PDK-only, probably a no-go for me; paddles just aren't the same ...

If you have the $, keep the cayman for the track (get a trailer and turn into full track car), and the GT2 for the street. Easy.

Honestly, I think a GT2 is way too much car for street use - would be way underutilized. Likewise for any GT3. And the 997 cab. And the Cayman R ...

Currently leaning towards staying with the Cayman for at least one more track season before upgrading it (along with tracking the other two cars), but we'll see.

From everything you'd said I'd say it's a no brainer to go with the RS 4.0 is you can find one. It has everything that you're looking for and is more forgiving than the GT2 would be for someone that isn't a professional driver. Taking the GT2 to the true limits takes an immense amount of skill, commitment, and risk which most won't/can't take. Think you'll be more than happy with the 4.0. Never driven one myself but have driven the previous RS on a Porsche Club track day and it was a masterpiece for a road car on a track. I can only imagine with that much more power being even better in the straight sections.

Problem with the 4.0 is that it's expensive and rare, so I'd feel really bad if it got scuffed up or worse on the track. The GT2 isn't cheap either, but will probably be around $110K to $120K with a lot of mods already done to it (bringing it closer to a GT2 RS), so it seems like a good deal.

Get the GT3 RS if you want a car well suited for the track. It is a great car and a better track car. If you did more street than track I would tell you to get the GT2.

In the past I have had both GT2 and GT3 RS, Turbo and a number of Cup Cars. For the track the GT3 or the Cup is the way to go. For the street you can't beat a car with 500 ft.lbs + of torque!

Good luck with your decision.

Why is a TPC Turbo Cayman R PDK a bad idea? I've always thought that would make the coolest track car.

If you get the GT2, do yourself a favour and address the LSD immediately. Most of the LSDs that has shown up to me looking like this are from GT2 track toys:

Search here in this forum for "LSD Buster" for more details of what I speak. Read the thread. Read all 30+ pages of the thread.
