A Tragic Reminder
2 nights ago just down the street from my home a 16 year old girl was racing her boyfriend down Coto Drive, she lost control and slammed into a tree. She died at the scene and these pictures remind us that racing is for the track. The impact was so great that the rear wheels are suspended in air.

Everyone give your kids a big hug today because this shows how quickly and innocently they can be taken away. Very sad.

Tragic. Talk to your kids and practice what you preach (or don't let them see you driving wrecklessly).

Tragic. Life and dreams thrown away. Years of growing, development, sacrifice and perseverance squandered. Love and family never fulfilled.
Driver's License qualification testing is ridiculously negligent in the U.S. If you haven't already, take it upon yourself to have all drivers in the household trained in private schools for accident-avoidance, high-performance driving, etc. Drivers speed, that's reality. Learning how to handle a car at speed and in a skid is critically important. Additionally, many drivers, upon being exposed to high speed maneuvers in school learn respect for speed and reaction time, and have more knowledge with which to make decisions on the street. And in a potential accident scenario, I'd bet a well-trained driver has a significantly better chance of lessening the severity of outcome through their reactions to the situation, and preventative measures to avoid it in the first place. Knowledge is key. Keep your kids ignorant and let them drive, and you're gambling with their lives. Outranked in foolishness only by handing them a gun with no training.
My kids are going to learn to control a vehicle in karting, then in driver training school soon as they are of age. I want them to enjoy driving, and have the skill and knowledge to make responsible and prudent decisions, and to be their own lifesaver should the situation require it.

While I agree that it is vital to know the physics involved with a vehicle and how to control one, this is sheer stupidity. I feel horrible for the people she/he affected, but I cannot offer my sympathy for someone who street races. If you're old enough to drive, you have the mental capacity to know what you should/shouldn't be doing.

Btw, there are exceptions to every rule. Some kids that attend martial arts studios go out and beat people up. Some trained track racers go out and race on the street. The variable there is quality of parenting and other influences, and the natural tendencies of the individual.
