997.2 GT3 Smog Check Issue

Purchased a CPO 2010 GT3 in 2013. CPO documentation states the car has been lowered and center muffler delete.

Fast forward to 2016 and I need to get the car smogged as part of my registration renewal. Car did not pass visual inspection since the center muffler is gone.

Do I have a right to go back to the dealer and have them install the factory center muffler? Has this happened to anyone else? I figure if I ever wanted to sell, it would be best to have it stock.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

The current laws require a much more vigorous visual inspection and your car can fail even if emissions are fine....since the missing center muffler was disclosed to you I don't think you have any recourse with the dealer...it probably easily passed smog under the old law...post a wtb for a center muffler in the marketplace...a lot of guys (not in California) have removed or changed them and you should be able to find one at a reasonable price...good luck, had a hell of a miserable time smogging my GT3 after the law changed

Go to another smog shop, preferable not star certified unless u r required to do so.

Most shops don't really know what's stock. Some won't really care. Usually a ghetto shop is best

that might work if the first shop did not send in a fail to DMV...I believe if they sent in a fail you will have to make an appointment with the local referee and they will give it a complete check

Really appreciate the feedback.

I called my dealer today and explained the situation. They were really great about it and their only concern was that I could have installed the center muffler delete myself. I explained that I had documentation stating it was purchased with the vehicle CPO.

The sales manager (great guy) said he'd discuss this with the pre-owned manager and get back to me. Fingers crossed!

I'll update when I hear back.

When I traded my 10 GT3 for my 15 GT3, a part of me wishes I had kept it, I had a Sharwerks center delete on the car. The dealer told me I had to have the original exhaust on the car in order for them to CPO it to another customer.

Update - The dealer wants me to come in with the car and they will take a look at exactly what parts they need to order. I'm going in next Monday. I'll keep you posted on how smooth this goes.

Update:

Dropped off the GT3 at the dealer 2 weeks ago after they agreed to install a stock center muffler at no cost.

Took a while to get the part from Germany but I finally picked up the car today all stock. Sounds crazy but the car is "so quiet" now. Also replaced my cup tires with S-02 Pole Positions. Feels like a totally different car!

For the past two weeks, I was given a 2016 Cayenne Diesel which was such a great car that I will give up the Range Rover soon for a GTS! Great sales pitch for dealers to give Porsche loaners.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Also, props to Auto Gallery Porsche in Woodland Hills, CA for making this right by me!
