991 GT3 RS gearing? 2600rpm at 60mph?

Hello, huge fan of the car but was curious.

Motor Trend recently reported that the engine rpm in the top gear traveling at 60mph is 2600rpm. Is this correct?

What is the opinion from owners on the suitability of cruising at 80mph for an hour or so?

While I realize it is a track oriented car, I am curious what the maximum speed in each gear actually is.

Thank you.

Because I want to know, that's why. I like facts. Do you have a problem with that? Do you have anything to contribute?

Also remember the gear scaling will be different considering the higher RPM, so 190mph is achieved in that same gear doing 60mph.

Interesting, seemingly very aggressive gearing. Thank you.

Good luck finding any place within a half day's drive of San Jose you can actually cruise at 80mph for any length of time without incurring the wrath of the local law enforcement.

I do not have a GT3 but both my Boxster and my Turbo handle ~80mph (or higher)) cruising for an hour or more even in elevated ambient temperature (118F) with no ill effects.

Can't recall off hand the RPMs but the Boxster only has a 5-speed and its RPMs are probably well above 3K and even the Turbo with its 6-speed RPMs are close to 3K.

Based on my experience I'd cruise them both at 100mph or higher highway/traffic conditions permitting and if it was legal to do so with no more concern about the engine than cruising at any other speed.

While this engine loves to rev .
It can cruise very comfortably at low RPM. This is managed perfectly by the ECU.
Vario cam, ignition and fuel timing are optimized.

That said At 80 + mph you will notice that the aerodynamics take over and the car plants like it is on rails. It is really happy in these ranges sand so will you be.

Since my 335d, I reverse commute most days of the week to Pleasanton and back at 85mph. Any drive on the weekend on 280, 85, 680 and 101 south of Gilroy and Hwy 1 south of 156 in the car is 85mph and 80mph on the bike. I've been pulled over once, never ticketed.

So very smooth and not buzzy. Although downforce would affect mileage if that was a concern.

Yes it is a very easy car to drive on the interstate. I drove one all over Europe for about 1200 miles in October and then from Philadelphia to Atlanta. Easier to drive those distances than a 997 GT3 RS. Cruising at 80 MPH in 7th gear it is easy to accelerate without the need to downshift a gear.

There has traditionally been a graph at the back of your owner's manual where there is a plot of RPM vs speed in each gear.

You are lucky. I watched a CHP cruiser Sunday working his radar magic just after Vasco Road on ramp -- and just past the truck check station -- on I-580 (east bound). (Might point out on a Sunday afternoon eastbound I-580 is the "reverse commute" direction.)

Parking on the frontage road with the CHP cruiser visible on my left out of the corner of my eye I watched cars/vehicle going by and spotted a number of vehicles going quite a bit faster -- ~10mph -- than other vehicles.

But then I spotted a small Honda/Toyota sporty looking car going by in the fast lane at my estimate at more than 10mph over the limit and as I watched the car go by I noticed the CHP cruiser was starting to move.

I jumped on the freeway at the Greenville Road ramp and sure enough spotted the cruiser with the car pulled over in the brake check area at the top of the grade at the Flynn Road exit.

I am fortunate, no question.
