Sure if you wait a year the GT2s will probably come down to $100k or less depending on mileage and options, but the 2001 turbos will also come down probably into the $50k range.
The GT2 is a supremely more rewarding car to drive than the 996 turbo in my opinion. It is also a lot more rare, which is not a bad thing.
However, if you are a novice driver who likes to drive aggressively in the corners and deep in the throttle; keep your modified 996TT.
Good luck!

I hope for selfish reasons you are right.

I had a 2001 Turbo, converted to Ruf Rtubo spec. Loved the car. Bought a 2003 GT2 in June 2004. I planned to keep the Ruf, but after 3 months I realized that anytime I went to drive one I took the GT2. I simply lost interest in the Ruf, and that is hard to believe as it was an unbelievable car.
That being said I only drive it on weekends and if it were my everyday car the Ruf would have been the better choice. Otherwise the GT2 is unbelievable.

I had a very highly modified Protomotive 996TT that was very fast-- probably still faster than the vast majority of modded Turbos out there. The GT2 is so great that even in stock trim, I really never looked back and missed it.
Yes, it really is that good. On paper, the 997TT may look better statwise, but it will NEVER capture the essence of a GT2.
Besides, a few tweaks from Ruf and some Motons or JRZs with some monoballs will make mincemeat out of the new 997 Turbo... which is now basically an electronic car that might as well have an auto pilot switch, and still quite a bit heavier than the GT2, which I am confident you would notice on the racetrack.

Yea i totally agree with you guys, 996TT/997TT as well being heavy and just not a true true enthusiast car to track and so on.. I want a damm GT2, but this GT3 has got my eye, either way im hoping to hop into either after the summer, who knows maybe even before. I say go for the GT2 man, the car is simply amazing

I have a 05 GT3 and to say I love it would be a fair statement. However, if I run across a GT2 in equal shape I would really have to sit down and evaluate my options. A GT2 is definitely in my future.
