$30K track tool...
If you were to spend somewhere around $30K, (+/- $5K) is there a Porsche out there that will compete with an Evo 8 and/or a Z06 (C5) as a track car / canyon carver? All would need to be street legal. Can you find a 993 in the mid 20's and modify it to be competitive? If not, what other P-cars would be competitive?
(I posted this already in the 911 section, but I thought I'd post it here as well since you guys always have good advice. )

A properly modded 944 Turbo will get the job done, but you'd be hard pressed to find that level of speed, with reasonable reliability and streetability for 30k from a modern Porsche.
A supercharged Boxster with proper suspension would work, too, but a good one for 30k will be tough.
A plain Jane 99 996 can be had for low 30s, and will hang just fine with those cars, giving up a little straight line speed to the Z06.
There are some very fast 914s around.

Great point on the 944 Turbo PMac.
CJA, Ill do the same with the 944T as I did with the 993 on the other thread.
89 944 Turbo $15k approx for a decent car. (247hp stock) Almost 50/50 weight distribution. Comes standard with limited slip and pretty decent brakes for the car (Get some nice pads).
Header, straight pipe and muffler. $2000
ECU Tuning (Chip)$400
Leda Coilovers $3000
MAF $1500.
Here you then have a sub 3000 lbs car with over 350hp. For relatively short $. 944's are a blast on the track.

If you were to stay with the 911 platform only, what would you do??? I saw an ad in GT Purely Porsche about early model 911's (72-74) that have 3.0 motors dropped in them. I think they were in the $30K range. Anyone have any experience with anything similar?

In that case, I would pick up an 78 911 SC$8-$10k and drop a 3.6 in it. Get some PSS9's, sway bars, big reds, and you are set.

i think that he may be looking to finance $30k not cash. maybe that is why he is thinking 996 and comparing Z06 and EVO8 since they are all about $30k.
Yes you can hang with those cars in a 996... my first upgrade would be suspension

The more I think about it, it seems like an "old school" 911 with some modern upgrades may be the way to go.
Something like this:

Yes, the old school 911's with a big motor are fun, but you are going to be hard pressed to match the more modern cars in both straight line speed and handling.
I have a car similar to the RS pictured. On the track, a well driven Z06 is still quicker, with significantly less driver imput. If you are up to the challenge, they can be fun / rewarding to drive quickly and the they won't depreciate like the newer cars.

CJA,
It is a 72 with an RS look, 92 3.6 stock motor, factory 915 trans, big brakes and a Bilstein sport suspension. It's street legal, but usually spends more time on the track than street. It weighs between 2450 - 2550 lbs wet.
With the big motor, they're quick out of the hole and very responsive, but a turbo is generally faster from 100 mph +, (although I held off an older 3.6 single turbo up to about 165). That's redline in 5th and it will pull it given enough room.
