I could believe it. We just keep thrashing the thing around until it beats the Z06. Worked for GM 1st time around...

 

This is a great example of what an optimized suspension geometry will do. 997 GT3 derives its suspension from the 996 GT3-RS.

 

Very true. Relative to the Z06 (yeah, yeah I know, not a direct competitor, yada yada ), and the GT3 does better on a high-horsepower track with a roughly 20% power disadvantage.

There's got to be aero issues in there, as well as tire choice, too. Still, to be within 10 seconds (out of 460) of the Carrera GT, with a 200 HP disadvantage, that's damn impressive.

 

What I find remarkable is that the CGT did a 7.36 lap in 2002 and 2 years later it does a 7.28, that's a 8 seconds difference and that is a lot. Anybody got an explanation for that? Non-streettires?

The 997 Gt3 comes standard with either the Pilot Sport Cups or the Corsa system tires. Both are specific compound tires and not the same as the race tires that are available so these are streetable versions. The GT3 suspension was tuned to take advantage of these tires and, right here, is the result.

Different drivers but probably the same tires. Surprised that Horst's time is better tan Walther's. Maybe the weather conditions were a factor or there was some traffic in the ring.

 

Hmm that's hard to believe, if the track was wet or there was too much traffic, Rörhl would have known the car could be faster and probably would have insisted on trying it some other time. For Porsche the ringtimes are of reasonable value, maybe Autobild did use different tires because I remember there was some (unofficial) arguing going on between Ferrari and Porsche because the Enzo was supposedly timed on racing tires although Ferrari never brought the Enzo to the ring, Porsche felt a bit cheated because they timed the GT merely in stock condition.

 

It was my understanding that the track was slightly damp the first time around for Rohrl, and that the 7:28 thats being listed as the first, wasn't an official time either.

I could be wrong on that though.

 

That and GM used a modified car on track tires on a closed circuit to achieve that time.

 

Just curious, do you know what modifications and tires were used for the Z06 test? Also where did you find this info? I find it a bit misleading that manufacturers brag about ring time but don't disclose details such as tire choice, suspension settings, and other variables. I'm sure R-compounds alone will acount for 10+ seconds at the ring so it's not a minor detail to be left overlooked!
