Is the 997 GT3 $50k better than a 996 GT3?

Anyway, I don't think 997 GT3 prices will sag much at all until the next model comes out. You cannot compare them to turbos, at least not 996 TTs. They sold so many of those things, depreciation was murder. (Ask me how I know.) GT3s seem to be much more rare, and thus hold value much better.

Maybe. Certainly the 996 GT3 dropped in value before the 997 was really a factor. In 2004 you would have paid around $ 105 for the car and by late last year you could find them in the mid to high 80's with only dealers asking 90 or more for CPO cars.

I have 4600 miles on my 996 GT3 with three years of factory warranty left. When I am out of warranty....? My MSRP was $123,000. The dealer just replaced my front main seal.

Marginally better, yes. "Massively", no way. Track times will be only a few tenths apart. No PASM, TC or hole in the roof on 996 version. 997 has a few more ponies & better looks (outside only IMO) and they'll probably flood the market with 2x the number of cars vs prior GT3. And no way "107 out the door".
RS in the US is a marketing gimmick.

Lots of 997 GT3 haters from a lot of folks who HAVE YET TO DRIVE ONE.
Porsche has always moved the game forward, and there is no reason to believe that Porsche hasn't with the new GT3. My prediction is that the new car will be marginally better in objective criteria, and far better subjectively. I've had 3 996 cars and 1 997 chassis car. Based on my limited experience, the 997 GT3 will be astonishing.
But whatever, we'll soon start hearing the reports. . .

This is my take as well. I think the 2 cars are fairly close in terms of both objective and subjective performance with edge going to the 997 version. I'll grant that newer technology has advanced the new GT3 but the recent reports of N-ring times and given that the new car is running cup tires stock would seem to indicate that advances are not dramatic. Porsche's own performance specs. indicate that the 2 cars are very close. Given the drivers aids/sunroof etc. added to the new car vs. the more primal 996 version, I'd say that the jury is still out on which is the better driver's car.
