Best Engine in the World?
#16
Not to be cheeky, but the lowly Civic Type-R's B16B makes 185HP from 1.6 liters, or 116HP/liter. not only does it beat the GT3, but this engine is very very cheap, and has been around for many years.
i'm no honda fanatic (i don't even own one). but that's still impressive **** for a motor that's a fraction the cost of the other motors mentioned.
beyond that, as others have said, the BMW S54, and the lump in the current M5/M6 are really impressive. the V10 revs past 8k RPM, and its a BIG engine-- 5 liters, vs only 3.6 liters for the Porsche. getting those kinda revs on a production engine that large is pretty darn fantastic. on paper, i'd argue that its even more impressive than what Porsche has wrought with the GT3.

I do agree about the GT3 engine. I would add the BMW V10, the F430's V8, and the Z06's LS7 to that list. The reasons are not just for specific output, but technology and broad powerbands.

The Ferrari F430 engine is superb too.
But............
the S54, considering it punched out over 100hp/L as a 2001 model, and that 100,000 S54s will eventually find their places into M models...
is the best medium displacement, mass produced engine ever. BMW has apparently said they will never make anything like it again.
I wonder if the new V8 M3 will have anything as hellacious.

the B18C found in the Integra Type-R (but frequently swapped in to the EK and even EG bodied Civics) is 1.8 liters had 200HP from the factory. however, that's a lower specific output than the B16 in the Civic.
I don't own any Hondas, but Type-R B16's and B18's are THE most popular performance motors in my country (simply a function of economics) so I'm reasonably confident about my assertions. You can google it too.
Peace!
P.S. no arguments about the GT3 engine being a good 'un (I'm biased!)

The GT3 engine is my favorite N/A engine overall, though.

hummm... i've never had this problem in none of my Porsches... weird... what is a 'pop out'??? does it pop out all the time??? or just once in a while due to not shifting properly??? cuz alot of cars 'pop out' of gear due to not shifting completely in to gear... even the Gallardo 6speed i drove it took some pressure to fully ingauge 2nd... just wondering

Apparently it pops out while in 2nd gear when people are engine braking to slow down. I (thankfully) haven't seen this problem with my car.
I don't thiink it's necessarily due to people not shifting properly, since a lot of experienced drivers/racers have had the problem occur as well. Plus, Porsche recognizes it as a inherent problem already. The posts in the thread provide quite a bit more info.

(Z06 LS7) nice engine and all but its as old as my dad, all i got to say... (F430) great engine! (997 GT3) BEST ENGINE IN THE WORLD!!!
