Best Engine in the World?

Who here agrees that the 997 Gt3 is one of the best engines ever made

Let's see why!

Porsche Engineers were able to squeeze out 415bph out of a 6 cylinder engine, it redlines at 8400 rpm (as much as a s2000)

0-62mph 4.3 seconds
0-99mph 8.7 seconds

The 415 bhp 3.6 liter flat-six engine produces output of 84.7 kilowatts (115.3 bhp) per liter of displacement.

I just can't think of another car that has those numbers on a NA engine.

Honda F20C (S2000 2.0L) - 240 hp / 2.0L = 120 hp/L

I do agree about the GT3 engine. I would add the BMW V10, the F430's V8, and the Z06's LS7 to that list. The reasons are not just for specific output, but technology and broad powerbands.

i think for an NA motor, that, the CGT, and f430 and lp640 come to mind as being the best.

remember tho, Porsches numbers are consevative and the last GT3 was able to do 0-60 in 4.0 seconds. i have not doubt in my mind the 997 GT3 will hit -3.7-3.8.

heres a test for the 996 GT3

Displacement: 220 cu in, 3600cc
Power (SAE net): 375 bhp @ 7400 rpm
Torque (SAE net): 284 lb-ft @ 5000 rpm
Transmission: 6-speed manual
Wheelbase: 92.7 in
Length: 174.6 in
Curb weight: 3050 lb
Zero to 60 mph: 4.0 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 8.8 sec
Zero to 130 mph: 14.8 sec
Street start, 5 to 60 mph: 4.4 sec
Standing 1/4-mile: 12.3 sec @ 118 mph

I would add BMW's S54 - the one from the E46 M3. Was it 5 or 6 years in a row that it was voted Engine of the year?
Also the M5/M6 engine should be considered.

And the 55K Merc one is a spectacular engine as well.
It's hard to choose for me!

No wait, I vote for the Carrera GT engine. The sound alone makes it 100x better than any engine ever produced!!

Althought not as powerful, let's not forget the BMW E46 M3 engine; the S54. Its won the International Engine of the Year award for best 3 to 4 liter engine 6 years in a row. Beating Porsche time and time again:

"Best" tends to be relative, but for an overall production NA engine, the 3.6 is certainly in the top five so far as I'm concerned.

Ferrari CS is more, and it's a V8 that revs to 8500 with extremely fast drive-by-wire throttle response to enable 150 ms gear changes.

425 BHP in 3.586 liters = 118.5 BHP/liter

OT: love the CS. If it had a gated shifter it would be in my garage.

Anything making over 115hp/L N/A in production form is doing very well.

The mazda rotaries KILL piston engines in that department, but it's not really a fair comparison.

Thumbs up hmm

997 GT3 Engine is the best in the world right now. Bar none.

The Ferrari F430 engine is superb too.

But............

the S54, considering it punched out over 100hp/L as a 2001 model, and that 100,000 S54s will eventually find their places into M models...

is the best medium displacement, mass produced engine ever. BMW has apparently said they will never make anything like it again.

I wonder if the new V8 M3 will have anything as hellacious.

S54. Getting tons of HP per liter before it was cool + flat torque curve + that sound......great engine.

I think part of 'M' strategy is at least 100hp per liter. V8 for M3 should not disapoint.
