I agree and if the 996 GT3 weighs less it's not by a significant amount. Keep in mind the previous generation GT3 had 18 inch wheels vs. 19 for the new one and the 997 has a sunroof both of which add weight to the car. It could also be that the 997 has larger brake calipers ( a good thing) which also adds weight. This additional weight is probably completely offset by purchasing the composite brakes which is unsprung weight (a very good thing)!

Ok, so where is the weight saving then. Sadly enough following Porsche car history, each new modell year got heavier...

in the feb. 07 issue of "excellence" there is a six page article on the gt3-rs. it states that the weight of the u.s. car is 3062 lbs.dry weight. the dry weight of the ROW rs is 2755 lbs. dry weight meaning, no fluids whatsoever.

this sounds about right... and the USRS should be around 3000lb...

I have weight data from plenty of 996 GT3, as the car is quite popular on the SCCA Solo program. Super Stock cars (no modifications allowed other than mufflers and wheels) hit the scales at 3,000 lbs - 3,050 lbs. This is on calibrated electronic scales, with some fuel in them.

My car hits the scale at 2,851 lbs with no gas, full interior , 10"/12" wheels with 285/335 tires and FabSpeed muffler bypass pipes.

AWE's 997 GT3 with no gas would hit the scales at 3,195 lbs. That's a bit heavy, but a lot of aftermarket parts are already available to get that weight down.

My expectation is that the US 997 GT3 RS with no gas will come at around 3,130 lbs, 3,240 lbs with a full gas tank.

With $20k on lightweight 18" wheels, Carbon seats, mufflers bypass pipes (hopefully from FabSpeed), PCCB, the US RS could come down to 3,000 lbs with a minimum fuel load (1/8th of a full tank). A 3,000 lbs 911 with 415Hp has to be fun.

I still don't justify how the most profitable auto maker in this planet can't afford to install lighweight body parts, while GM with all its financial difficulties has carbon body pieces on the so much cheaper Z06.

I prefer to trust the scale. I just have a hard time thinking that a ROW RS dry weight is so close to the 2,700 lbs 997 RSR that has carbon body panels, lightweight wheels, no A/C, no radio, no carpets, lexan windows, no fuel, straight pipes exhaust. Porsche has been cheating with car weights for a while.

I think the answer to that question is built into the comment. Unfortunate for true enthusiasts that would be willing to pay what is necessary to get it right.
