996 GT3 to F355 - Worth it?
#17
Personally, I feel that i would get more pleasure out of driving a 335 over the GT3 desipite the obvious lack in performance. I feel that if you want the car, and you have the means, go for it. The 355 is the first F car that i fell in love with.

Anyway, somebody on RL was looking for hp ferrari info. I dug this up from fchat.

US 360s are not only underpowered but underbraked. Not sure about 355s, as I think they are dated and never really considered one.
EDIT: I don't have experience really with the 993 chassis, but with both 996s and 997s, when you load them up in a corner they feel oh so good. My midengine ferrari? Get ready to hold on tight. Can be a butt puckering experience on the street and takes away some of the fun. You also have to think through things like attention, parking, maintenance, reliability etc.
The 996 GT3 is track tested and a brutally lethal machine. Comparatively, I always felt more like a poseur in the Ferrari. Looks fast, but w/o the track pedigree or prowess.

The 355 and 996 GT3 are within about 50 pounds and 5 horsepower of each other. If you'd call that a significant difference in performance, I have a bridge for sale with a Porsche crest on it for you.

No 'decent' tracks in southern CA? Huh?

They are more than decent, obviously.

If the Ferrari 355 has been your personal favorite for quite some time, and your in the situation to buy the "PERFECT" 355 you might as well pull the trigger! The car could end up being the one you keep around forever.

Most 355's I've seen dyno at around 310-315. Mine was a hair under 320 or so if memory serves when stock.
Most GT3's I've seen dyno around 330 and change.
GT3's typically pull a 0-60 of 4.0-4.5 seconds, depending on the driver and conditions. Most 355's do it in 4.3-4.9. GT3's generally crank off a 12.3-12.4 quarter at 116-118 or so. 355's generally do a quarter in 12.6-12.8 at 114-116.
These are not drastic, earth-shaking performance differences. The GT3 is a fine car, and yes, it has a small performance advantage over a 355, as much as would make no difference on the street. I love Porsche, but jeez, put down the kool-aid for a minute.

My F355 Spider is a lot slower than my GT3. Turn in is slower too. But who cares? These cares shouldn't be compared. One is for cruising and the other is for hauling a@#. My F355 is for sale if anyone is interested, PM me.

Although the 355 may be slower - or a bit slower than the GT3, I still have an M5 and QP Sport GT. Of course though, they do not deliver the same driving experience the GT3 offers.
But it doesn't matter since I don't think i'll be getting a F355 anymore

Have seen quite a few dynos posted of the 996 GT3 more in the three fifty range+. The 355 in the 310 range on Fchat.
Anyway, coming from a Modena 360, the GT3 is a far more serious driver's machine. In the end, it's all about needs/wants/priorities. Hard core track enthusiasts would never buy the 355 over the gt3, while fcar enthusiasts and concours types will covet the 355.
