so i realize that these are not road legal in the US but how is it enforced? i mean, what would stop me from buying one, insuring it, registering it and then driving it? does the DMVknow to look out for certain VINs?

They are legal to import if you only drive a limited amount, etc. I don't have the info handy, but if you look it up on the DOT site, you'll find it.
