Mk1 is the first generation of the GT3 (started 1999)
Mk2 is the second generation of the 996 GT3.

The first generation was only sold in Europe. The car has 360 bhp (against 381 of the MK2), 30 kg lighter than the MK2. The Mk2 is 10 cm wider at the front. The rear wing, side skirts and optics are different. When the Mk1 came off there wasn't any RS version of the GT3 so the MK1 benefit of some things that later was only available in the RS, like the single mass flywheel (which by the way is a pain in the *** for daily driving)
