996 GT3 Engine rattle

I have an '04 GT3 with 6k miles. I get a strange metal on metal rattle at 1800 RPM. It is pretty loud. I thought that it was the after-market CATS that I had on the car....thinking that a chunk came loose inside.

I went back to stock and the noise it still there. Its annoying...everytime on the way to a stop (or crusing at 20mph) this loud rattle appears for a second or so. The dealer listened to the motor as I reved it up and down...and they have no idea where the noise is coming from. They commented that "these engines" are noisy. I am not buying it.

Any ideas?

Thank you, Karl

My engine rattles like crazy too. I have a single-mass flywheel which compounds the problem. Dealer proclaims it is the nature of the high-profile CAMS and the engine itself to be noisy... it is disconcerting, but i have been in a few other GT3s and they all had chattery engines, especially at idle.

They all do it.
The "rattle" ends at 2200rpm.

"Rattle" is a GT3's middle name....mine does too and it's normal. Add the lightweight fly-wheel...really a must and the rattling harmony that the clutch and motor will make is great !
