Kinda surprising to see. Car and Driver took a bunch of sporty to super sporty cars to VIR and put them through the wringer.

Base C6 Vette/Z51 beats 911 Turbo (by 2.2 sec) and Z06 beats GT3 (by 3.6 sec)... Handily.

Thats cool and props to Chevy for making such a monster car. While I would gladly settle for a ZO6, my desire would still be for a high dollar Pcar with a GT designation.

+1

I like the Z06 and agree it's allot of car for the money but when you drive them both back to back which I have the GT3 is the far better car on many levels, all of which you pay for.

The fact that it beat the GT3 by a few seconds in not relevant to me especially when you look at the details of that review. You'll find that the GT3 had the lowest time in the sectors with the most curves and the Z06 had the lowest sector times where the 90 extra HP can power it in the straights.

Drive them both and see for yourself.

I had an '06 Z06 and now have the GT3. The GT3 is definitely the richer driving experience. The only superior aspect of the Z06 is its power.

I must say, however, the GT3 really starts moving in third gear, it's surprising... not quite the thrust of my old 996TT, but close.

don't get me wrong... I'd take the 997TT or the GT3 any day... I'm just surprised how Chevy has smmothed out the C6 wrinkles.

The Z06 did that on run flats no less. Think what it could do on R compounds. I'll still take the GT3.

I have to think the 20" champion wheel/tire set was a disadvantage here. They kind of make a big deal out of the cars running all stock even though the GT3 was not on its factory wheels/tires.

Sure the Z06 is a ....good.. car; but at the end of the day, I'd rather own a Porsche if I had to choose one. Although owning both wouldn't hurt

What are we gonna do when the '09 Vette comes out w/ less weight and 650 HP? I sold my '03 Z06 for an '04 GT3 but come next year I may have to sell the GT3 for an '09 Z07 or whatever they'll calling it. Porsche'd better pull more HP out of their hat, I meant flat six.

And i'll say it again, Porsche isnt in the power wars, no need for it. In fact this is the first test where ive seen Vette's in favor.. Every little detail and thing plays a roll in these test's , especially drivers who arent familiar with driving a 911 such as the mid corner lift issue :P

I've run my GT3 on the same loop that I've run my Corvette FRC on many times in the past (It was the FRC before they badged it the Z06). Up PCH almost all the way to Fort Bragg and then East on 128 through the redwood forest. The GT3 is simply awe inspiring and much easier to get through the turns. It was a constant battle in the vette to keep the rear end planted on exits. Temps are generally cool up there (low 60's) and I run the porsche recommended temps in the PS2's- 32F and 39R. Once I got some heat in the tires the slight understeer that I had been experiencing was completely eliminated. It was just an absolute joy to drive. Sway bars are one stop from full stiff on the front and 2 stops from full stiff in the rear. Alignment is set up to Porsche specs.

A gentleman in an S4 twin turbo joined me part way through the last time I was up there. I could hear his tires squealing like a stuck pig through every turn while he was behind me. The GT3 just stuck like glue...You're even further rewarded for braking deeper into turns than you think you should. Really improves the turn-in and keeps the front planted.

If I had two garage spaces I would have kept that Corvette, it was quite a beast and a joy to drive. Unfortunately with only one spot and a 2nd spot costing up to around $200-$250 a month I decided for just one- the GT3. I'll say this too though- The vette feels a lot more stable in the mid triple digits than the GT3 does. Most likely due to the longer and wider wheel base.

I like the Z06 performance, but at the end of the day, I'd rather have the GT3 in the garage.
