2thfixr- And I'm assuming the new unit picks the signal up where the other one wasn't right?

Some speed detectors use pressure sensors in the road to gauge speed between two points; they won't register on any detectors.

Never gotten a speeding ticket in my life with a radar detector and I wouldn't take the chance running with one that I don't have faith in. It's just not worth the risk.
Maybe Terrence could identify exactly where some of these speed signs are. Maybe Jack is talking about a different sign that terrence also picks up and while the signs by Jacks are within specs, the signs by Terrence may not be. I think 2thfixr's post about possible causes explains it pretty good. While it certainly can and does occur that a V1 goes out of calibration, it would be really unusual for all 3 of his to do the exact same thing.

This could be a possibility.....

You can go to Valentine's website and punch in your V1's serial number and it will give you the firmware version of the unit. I sent mine in because they had new POP radar technology in the new ones and Valentine updated my unit to current specs for 75$...hard to beat that deal. Kevin

That sounds like the most probable reason. Thanks.

BTW, the speed sign I encounter most is on San Vicente in Brentwood.

No, my new one does the same thing. I actually have 4 V1s now and they all do the same thing. I hope I didn't confuse you guys, the main point of my post is that radar detectors (good ones at least) pick up radar only within the range for police radar. Those speed boxes operate outside of the approved range for police radar so they are filtered out by the V1 rather than triggering an alert. This is a good thing and doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with your V1. It freaked me out a bit at first but speed boxes don't give tickets so it's a non-issue.

I'd be curious what info they do record? You can bet flashing a posted speed is not all they do. I've noticed the one's around here have an antenae on top plus on occasion I've seen a cop sitting just down wind and hidden from one. Big Bro's watching you!!

I have noticed the same with my V1 as well. We have a number of speed signs in San Clemente that are built into light post. Sometimes I pick them up, sometimes I do not.

IMHO, they are probably just drifting just outside the frequency range.

terrence, are you talking about those speed signs that flash SLOW DOWN if you're going past the speed limit? my V1 picks those up as K bands....

They're all K band...I can't believe this thread isn't dead yet.

1. All of those signs are emitting K-band radar signals. They didn't install any special sensors in the road to monitor your vehicle speed. If they did they would need two of them- One to register the front and one to register the rear tires. This wouldn't make any sense because the distance between front and rear wheels is different on every car, truck, motorcycle, etc.
2. All of your valentine's are pieces of **** if they need to be regularly calibrated.
3. Get an Escort Passport 8500. It always works and it never needs new firmware or some bull**** new calibration because you left it in your car on a hot day.
4. No, it's not good that your Valentine's don't pick up the signal. Often times cops hide right near these signs. If your Valentine doesn't pick up the sign are you confident that it will pick up the police signal? Are you willing to risk a ticket or jail over it? Increases in insurance? Traffic school?

I can't believe how we just beat these threads to death. Die thread die!

I can't believe how we let new members bad mouth a great product that many members on here use regularly. Die newb die

All kidding aside. The V1 is a great product. I could care less if it does or does not detect speed signs. Speed signs don't issue tickets. It ALWAYS picks up calibrated law enforcement radar and it does it well with plenty of warning. Not only that, it does it with arrows Case closed. Valentine rocks!!!
